Day 3 was tough going. Tall reeds, brambles and so so many fallen trees! I’m attempting to travel source to sea down the River Thames. 210 miles of wading, swimming (!) and kayaking down quite possibly the busiest river in Britain. And I’m doing the whole thing alone and self-supported. The rule I’ve set myself for this mission is this: ‘in order to make progress I have to follow the course of th...

I’ve made it to Central London and it’s pretty damn surreal. It doesn’t feel too long ago that I could stretch out my arms and touch both banks! A humongous thank you to @thewellingtontrust for putting me up on the HMS Wellingotn. What a privilege! I may be in London but the trip is far from over. When I said “to the sea” I meant it. Sheerness is the aim. Avoiding Uberboats is the game. Bring on t...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find Thames Head to be a place of symbolic importance rather than visual grandeur. While the actual source can be underwhelming, especially in dry seasons, its status as the origin of the River Thames and the beautiful surrounding Cotswolds landscape are highly appreciated. Many come here to begin their journey along the Thames Path, finding the experience meaningful and inspiring. Reddit+1

"There isn’t actually much to see here. In the summer months, the groundwater level of the spring is too low, so no water is visible at all. It’s just a pile of stones, where a small puddle appears after heavy rain or during the winter months.
But this is the official source of the River Thames, and that makes the place impressive, magical, and deeply meaningful to me.
The surrounding landscape is also simply beautiful.
If you follow the Thames Path southward, after crossing the main road, you can walk along the dry riverbed of the young Thames. Depending on the time of year, you may walk several kilometres before the water finally emerges at the surface.
I was deeply moved and filled with awe by this marvellous place."

Stefan Gurtner

"I had the most unique experience of walking the Thames path across London west end to east end. It took me 8 hours to walk across London city, As a long distance walker I do enjoy it a lot. And this Thames path is fantastic"

Terra Ferme

"Visited here to start our Thames Path walk. Not much to see, but it’s the symbolic start of the Thames Path!"

In summer, it can be completely dry for several hundred meters downstream, with only a small puddle appearing after rain. Reddit This variability is part of its unique character.

For many, the true 'source' experience involves walking along the dry riverbed, following the nascent Thames downstream until the water becomes a consistent flow. This journey emphasizes the gradual formation of the river and the interconnectedness of the landscape. Reddit
