Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Threave Nature Reserve for its peaceful atmosphere, abundant wildlife, and accessible walking trails. The free entry and parking are significant draws, making it a great value for a nature escape. While the castle's inaccessibility is noted, it doesn't detract from the overall positive experience of exploring the wetlands and spotting various creatures.

"Lovely place to walk and connect with nature. Went here some time ago when the ospreys were nesting (they have departed for warmer climes now but I am sure will be back, old nest still in situ). The castle is still inaccessible but this does not spoil the enjoyment of this place, in fact in our opinion it enhances it as you don’t get lots of people piling over to it. Bird and wildlife hides are a good addition and the boardwalks make it very accessible for all mobilities. Well maintained and a peaceful place to visit. The walk takes about an hour to complete if you do the full circuit excluding the paths going off to the hides. Second visit and would definitely return if in the area. Amazing tree stump which appears to be the keeper of a huge amount of fungi, worth looking out for. Free to enter, free to park."

"Amazing place! Beautiful walk through marshland in a good level path if you go left. Lovely carved benches on the way. You can get a boat to the castle on the Loch but it was closed for repairs. You can still see the ruins from the path. Keep going to see animal hides. You can go round and end up back at the car park but steeper path. Can go back the way you came instead."

Hashmi Gor

"A lovely place to meander and watch the wild life from the strategically placed hides. Spacious car park with disabled bays. Toilets are open until 4pm. Free access to the toilets and nature reserve."

Threave Castle: A Glimpse of History

Dominating the views across the loch is the historic Threave Castle. Although currently inaccessible due to ongoing repairs, its imposing ruins still command attention and add a dramatic backdrop to the natural beauty of the reserve. Visitors can admire the castle from the walking paths around the loch, imagining its past as a formidable stronghold. Reddit

Historically, Threave Castle was a key stronghold of the Black Douglases, a powerful Scottish noble family. Its strategic location on an island in the River Dee made it a significant defensive structure. The castle has a rich and often turbulent history, having been besieged and captured multiple times throughout the centuries. Its current state of repair means that direct exploration is not possible, but the visual presence of the ruins offers a tangible link to Scotland's past.

The closure of the castle for repairs also means that the usual boat access to the castle is suspended. Reddit This temporary inaccessibility, however, has not detracted from the overall enjoyment of the nature reserve for many visitors, with some even suggesting it enhances the peaceful atmosphere by preventing large crowds from congregating at the castle itself.
