Saturday morning trail run in the sunshine. Starting from Penenden Heath I headed to Detling and then climbed up to the top of the Downs at White Horse Wood Country Park. After a quick detour to look the remains of Thurnham Castle it was a nice long descent past the Black Horse pub down to the vineyards. I stopped for a coffee and a very nice slice of cake at the Detling Community Store, and then ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise White Horse Wood Country Park for its beautiful panoramic views, historical castle ruins, and peaceful woodland walks, especially during bluebell season. It's a great spot for dog owners and families seeking open space. However, the lack of on-site facilities like toilets and cafes is a recurring drawback, and visitors should be prepared to bring their own provisions.

"This is a lovely open country park at the top of Detling hill.
It’s never really busy here and there is lots of open space for walking the dogs or letting the children run around.
There is a nice walk through the wooded area as well.
At the far end you have the remains of Thurnham castle to explore which was apparently first owned by William’s the conquerers brother. It’s a very interesting site to explore.
Only downside is there are no facilities here no cafe, shop or toilets so bear this in mind if you plan to stay for a while. However there is a few picnic tables and lots of open space to have a quiet picnic."

Daniel

"Started an enjoyable walk with uphill and downhill walking which started at the Country Park, so good exercise, however encountered sheep half way round (daughter petrified of animals of any variety) so had to abandon walk. Spent rest of time in the green area of the Park near to the car park, which was pleasant."

"Great views from north downs over Kent. Ruined castle to explore, woods and bluebells growing undisturbed.. what more do you want."
