Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the Verulamium Hypocaust and Mosaic, often calling it a 'hidden gem' of Roman history. The preservation of the mosaic and the ingenuity of the hypocaust system are frequently highlighted as major draws. While some find the building housing the remains a bit unassuming from the outside, the interior experience is overwhelmingly positive, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient life.

"There was a group of schoolchildren here when I arrived. Judging by their running and screaming, the splendor of the mosaic floor was truly driving them wild! Seriously, though, this is incredible. They have signs that provide an excellent history of where you are and what you are seeing, and the walkway around the entire perimeter lets you get a very good look. The walk through the park to get there was also nice. Don’t leave St Albans without stopping here."

"In short: A Hidden Gem of Roman History in St Albans.

During a visit to the park, I was genuinely surprised to discover a unique and exquisite piece of Roman history. Initially, my son noticed what he thought was a large coach beyond the play area, while I mistook the structure for a toilet block. It was a large, grey, and unassuming building, lacking any clear signposts or information, which made it seem unworthy of a visit.

However, curiosity got the better of me, as the structure appeared so out of place that I felt compelled to investigate. Imagine my surprise upon discovering that it housed an excavated Roman mosaic, lovingly preserved within its walls! The unexpected discovery was a delight.

Upon entering, the atmosphere was eerily quiet and chillingly cold. Accompanied only by my dog, I walked around the platform, reading the informative placards and marveling at the craftsmanship and preservation of the mosaic. It’s a testament to St Albans’ commitment to preserving their rich Roman history.

This hidden gem is yet another example of the city's dedication to preserving its historical treasures, and I wish more towns and cities would invest in similar endeavors."
