Reviews Summary

Thorndon Country Park is praised for its beautiful ancient woodlands, peaceful lake, and family-friendly Gruffalo trail. Visitors appreciate the ample space for picnics and dog walking. However, the parking payment system is a frequent point of frustration due to unreliable signal and lack of cash options. Recent changes involving fencing and potential livestock have also raised some safety concerns for visitors.

"It was a short journey from where we lived to get to this spacious and peaceful park. There are lots of trails, benches and the lake is very pretty. There is plenty of parking space on a Sunday and a handy map near the entrance to help you decide on a route. Quite a few families had organised picnic provisions to spend a good few hours and could watch their kids running around from deck chairs they’d bought with them."

"This place has become one of the most dangerous places for elderly, disabled, children, adults and dog walkers. The site has been mutilated by diggers putting up barbed wire fences all around the park.. you can't go anywhere without them penning you in.. they are planning to put livestock in some parts and the first thing a child will do when seeing a sheep or goat is run up and grab the fence.. im afraid it will take someone being seriously hurt before they will listen.. I spoke to a member of staff and asked why they are putting ilegal barbed wire fencing in a public place..he replied..'it's not a public place its private land and we can do what we like' that says it all really.. do not bring your children or you pets here if you want them to be safe..."

"Thorndon Country Park is a beautiful place to visit, offering scenic walking trails suitable for all ages and mobility needs. Whether you’re out for a casual stroll, a family day with kids, or a longer nature walk, the park provides a peaceful and enjoyable experience. The well-maintained paths, stunning woodland, and open spaces make it a great spot to unwind and take in nature.

One of the highlights is how accessible the park is, with routes that cater to different levels of mobility, making it welcoming for everyone. It’s also a great place for children, with plenty of space to explore.

The only downside is the parking payment system. The signal for WiFi and 4G is unreliable, making it difficult to pay via phone, and unfortunately, there is no cash payment option. This can be frustrating, especially for those who may struggle with digital payments.

That being said, Thorndon Country Park is an amazing place to visit, and we highly recommend it. Just be prepared for potential parking issues, and you’re in for a wonderful outdoor experience!"

Exploring Thorndon's Ancient Woodlands

Thorndon Country Park is renowned for its ancient oak woodlands, offering a glimpse into a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. These majestic trees create a canopy that filters sunlight, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor. Walking amongst them feels like stepping back in time, with gnarled branches and moss-covered trunks telling stories of seasons past. The park's description highlights this ancient aspect, making it a key draw for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil escape. Reddit

Visitors often describe the woodlands as peaceful and beautiful, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a more invigorating hike. The variety of trees and undergrowth supports a rich ecosystem, contributing to the park's natural charm. It's an ideal setting for photography, especially during autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, or in spring when new growth emerges. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes as some paths can be uneven. Reddit

Family Adventures and the Gruffalo Trail

Thorndon Country Park is a fantastic destination for families, with activities designed to engage children of all ages. A major attraction is the Gruffalo Trail, which brings the beloved children's book to life within the park's natural setting. This trail encourages imaginative play and exploration, making it a memorable experience for young visitors. Reddit

Beyond the Gruffalo, the park offers ample open space for children to run, play, and explore. Visitors frequently mention their children having the 'best time' tree climbing, leaf throwing, and treasure hunting. The presence of a cafe and picnic areas further enhances the family-friendly nature of the park, allowing for extended visits and comfortable breaks. Reddit

Navigating Parking and Access Concerns

A significant point of discussion among visitors is the parking payment system. The park relies on an app-based payment method, which is frequently hampered by unreliable mobile signal and Wi-Fi. This can lead to frustration, especially as there is no cash payment option available. It's advisable for visitors to be prepared for this potential issue, perhaps by downloading the app and setting up an account in advance, or by having a backup plan. Reddit

Furthermore, recent changes to the park's management have introduced concerns regarding access and safety. The installation of barbed wire fences and plans for livestock have led some visitors to question the park's suitability for children and pets, with one review noting a feeling of being 'penned in'. While the park aims to manage its land, these developments are important to be aware of before planning your visit, especially if you have young children or animals. Reddit
