Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about St Oswald's Church Widford, calling it a 'little chapel like church' and an 'atmospheric tiny gem' with fascinating Roman origins and well-preserved medieval wall paintings. Many appreciate the peaceful rural setting and the opportunity for scenic walks to nearby sites. However, some note that the church isn't always open, making interior viewing challenging.

"What a treat! This little chapel like church is an atmospheric tiny gem. Right by the farmhouse that was written about by KM Briggs in the childrens book Hobberdy Dick (1955) you can just picture the 'pale glimmering figure of a Roman soldier' that Dick used to see in the doorway of this church. Appropriate considering the discovery of the building's ancient roman origins. A pretty walk on to both Swinbrook Church with the Mitford graves and the fabulous Jacobean Asthall Manor, hard by St Nicholas Church. All very picturesque."

"I just love the idea that you be doing a nice trek and then come a beautiful old church all in the middle of nowhere and yet fully accessible. Full of history and a beautiful little place."

Michael Jones

"If you have a chance, take a nice 35 -45 minutes walk one way from Burford. The path is really nice and easy with some stals (low gates for dogs). You can meet cows on the fields. Otherwise you can drive just few minutes and then access without obstacles (one cattle grid). Church is lovely, located on the hill. Check its history because is very interesting."
