What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
York Art Gallery is praised for its friendly staff, excellent layout, and diverse collections, particularly the Harland Miller exhibition and contemporary ceramics. While some visitors find the presence of noisy children and staff disruptive to a quiet experience, the overall consensus is that the gallery offers significant artistic value and is well worth the admission fee, with many planning return visits.
"Very clean and tidy with Impossiblely friendly staff, great layout and tours, currently have a Harland Miller exhibition taking up all of the downstairs....I know local & famous etc but it's not for me.. but that's personal choice.
Exhibition of a lot of plates no title that I could see maybe hosting a traditional Greek wedding.

"Lovely gallery. Nice collection of contemporary English pottery and ceramics. Several nice 16th and 17th century oils, notably Procaccini's Annunciation, and also a nice Turner. There is currently a very good installation of digitally created visual and sensory art that is free access. Unfortunately my experience was a bit marred by the fact that children appear to be allowed to run and play freely and noisily through the galleries, and even two gallery employees engaged in an extended and loud conversation in the gallery, apparently oblivious to the quietude required for true enjoyment of the excellent sensory exhibits. Both parents and employees displayed a lack of appreciation for the contemplative nature of most gallery spaces. That said, the gallery is still well worth a visit. Simply be prepared to be annoyed if you are seeking a quiet refuge from bustling York."

"Superb permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics.
We were drawn by the Harland Miller exhibition which is excellent and well worth the ticket price. If we’d had time we’d have returned again that day - which you can with ticket t’s & c’s.
The Miller exhibition is playful yet thoughtful and well curated. I’m a typography fan so art that combines traditional skills with words and type gets my vote. Superb and inspiring stuff.
There are some interactive sections for adults and kids alike to have fun.
Highly recommended"
