What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking, expansive views from Mount Greylock's summit, often describing them as 'magical.' The Veterans War Memorial Tower is a highlight, though the narrow, spiral staircase presents a physical challenge for some. The historic Bascom Lodge and the overall natural beauty of the area are also frequently mentioned positives.
"Amazing views whether you climb the 93 ft tower or not! But it is well worth the effort to climb up there if you are physically able! Views include 5 states with 11 mountain ranges. Clean windows up top make it easy to take great pictures. Inside the base of the tower is a beautiful memorial to the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom."

"Unreal views. The tower is very claustrophobic and there are a LOT of narrow steps to get to the top. The stairs to the top only for one person, so you should announce yourself "Going up!" and coming down to avoid awkwardness. Definitely worth all the stairs, though, and there are places you can step off and catch your breath on the way up if you need to. In really really glad we went to the top and it's a beautiful monument"

"Some of the most magical sunrises and sunsets experienced here. Love the history and honoring of the VWM Tower. A treasured place to picnic/ hike/ or just, be and breathe - in the blessed outdoors.
Be it with Family, Friends, or Solo."

No, the Auto Road is typically closed during the winter months due to snow and ice. It usually opens in late May or early June and closes in October or November, depending on weather conditions. Always check the official Mount Greylock State Reservation website for current road status.

Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical for photography, offering dramatic lighting and fewer crowds. Mid-day can be bright, but the clear windows still allow for excellent shots of the distant landscapes.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast panoramas. If you plan to photograph details or wildlife, a telephoto lens can be useful. Don't forget a tripod for low-light conditions like sunrise/sunset. :iphone:
