Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in January

The Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, New Mexico. 45,000 acres of surreal, trail-free wilderness to explore. In Navajo, Bistahí, Bisti means "among the adobe formations.”

Great out of the way place. It's really fragile so tread lightly. No trails so take something to help you find your way back. Really easy to get turned around. [Bisti Rock Bird](https://i.imgur.com/Mic6QV5.jpg)

Reviews Summary

Visitors describe Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness as a breathtaking, unique, and truly magical destination, especially for photographers. While the challenging access and remote nature are significant hurdles, most agree the stunning badlands, hoodoos, and solitude make the effort worthwhile. Some find it a 'one and done' trip due to the difficulty, while others are captivated by its raw beauty.

"You really have to want to see this area. The drive is fairly long and the roads are really bad. Slow going and not that easy to navigate. I had this on my bucket list so its most likely a one and done. The Bisti De Na Zin area is much easier to access and enjoy. I do recommend this hike if you have time."

Bonnie Kositzke

"Pretty easy to find the parking lot off of NM-57. The drive in on County Rd 7800 and 7820 was fine. No 4WD necessary and no high clearance necessary but I'll bet with the least amount of rain, that could change quickly. The hike in was easy. There is apparently a homeless person living in a small shallow cave by the chocolate mushrooms. Not sure how they got there as there is not an extra vehicle in the parking area. Be cautious."

Kenneth Adams

"Hidden gem, highly recommend! There are wild stallions running around a few miles away. Middle of no where but worth the risk of getting lost lol. Absolutely a unique experience! New Mexico is underrated. White Sands and Carlsbad are amazing too!"
