Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Ten Broeck Mansion for its beautiful architecture, well-maintained gardens, and engaging guided tours that bring local history to life. The passionate guides and the historical significance of the site are frequently highlighted as major positives. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one mention suggests a need for improved board-member-to-executive-director relationship building.
"The Ten Broeck Museum is a wonderful historic mansion museum in Albany, NY. The mansion was built in 1797 by Abraham Ten Broeck and his wife Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. Ten Broeck was the first mayor of Albany and his wife was the only daughter of the powerful landowner/patroon Stephen Van Rensselaer. After Ten Broeck, the house was expanded by different owners and was donated as a museum in 1948. The mansion has several interesting rooms, nice views, and has a nice set of gardens.
The tour experience here is wonderful. The tour gives a nice personal history of the different owners of the house. A history of the people who worked as servants or slaves is also presented. The history of each room is presented in an interesting fashion. Altogether, the tour covers three floors of the house.
The Albany County Historical Association does a great job maintaining this historic site. Either before or after your tour be sure to check out the beautiful gardens that surround the mansion. It is best to book a tour online ahead of time. There is a free parking lot at the mansion. If in the Albany area put this on your list of places to see."
