The trailhead to Aneroid lake is just around the Lake from the Inn. It’s a steady uphill hike — you’ll gain just under 3,000 feet in about 6 miles, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views around every corner!

This is a LOOOONG one! It depicts The Wallowas and a walk from the top of the Mt Howard Tram along the ridge top, descending down to beautiful Aneroid Lake and back to Wallowa lake! A nice little 15 mile loop. I wanted to reenact this loop as I had done it years back, before I met David, with a girlfriend. She and I we’re heading out for an overnight in late fall. We had quite an adventure and I ...

Reviews Summary

Aneroid Lake is a breathtaking alpine destination, but the journey is a significant challenge. Hikers praise the stunning lake views and the rewarding sense of accomplishment after a strenuous climb. However, the trail can be difficult, especially in early season with mud and snow, and some find the presence of a lodge detracts from the wilderness feel.

"Hiked on 5/25/25 Started at 06:00 hours and ended at 15:15 hours. 1/4 of the hike is all dry and doable. The other 3/4 of the hike there is mud, water puddles, snow, and melting snow. I would personally not go back during this time since the snow was melting and it was extremely hard to make it to the lake with regular hiking trail shoes. The lake is still frozen and couple amounts of feet of snow still up there. It’s a long hike but the way up there is definitely an adventure. Would recommend to any advanced hiker."

"From wallowa lake trailhead its a 3000 ft climb over 6.25 miles to the lakeside...some spectacular views to be expected from eagle cap wilderness areas"

"Great lake and the hike is long but not that hard. 12 miles or so roundtrip from the powerstation at the end of the road at Wallowa Lake area (it's past the horse guide place). The trail is entirely along the East Fork Wallowa River Trail (Trail 1804). The lake is gorgeous with lots of camping spots. Watch the forecast though, because if there's even a small chance of a thunderstorm (very common in the wallowas) then it could very likely happen all around this lake (happened to me and some friends, lightening striking all around as we camped when there was a 15% chance of a thunderstorm). Still, great place with lots of good peak hikes around including Pete's Peak. I like to go up to Tenderfoot pass and turn left onto the ridge (called the Imnaha Divide) there's a great view of the deeper Eagle Cap all the way to Wallowa Lake from up there.

Note that you will come to a small lake just before Aneroid Lake so if it seems like it's underwhelming, walk a bit more, you're probably at the wrong lake. Aneroid is right at the base of a granite cliff / mountain on the right side of the lake. There's also a private camp at the mouth of the lake that you can walk around but can't camo in. It's called Camp Halton I believe and in the summer there's usually a caretaker there who can tell you about the area."
