What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Howell Mountain wineries are overwhelmingly positive, praising the exceptional quality and age-worthiness of the wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, and the stunning vineyard views. Some visitors note the high cost and the need for advance booking. One review mentioned issues with cork quality from a specific wine club, but this seems to be an isolated incident not reflective of the general winery experience.
"We paid over 1k for a wine club membership at the wine collection. All corks of this winery have broke and destroyed the quality of the wine. We live just north of Boston and get most California state every region wine. Craft, small and big. Don't sign up for the scam of wine collection near Pier 39 in san fran. My wife and I literally travel the world for wine and vacation and have been part of field recordings since the start. This winery has the most defective fake plastic corks that ruin the wine quality for the 90 plus dollar bottle of wine. La rouge and vie had 3 out of 6 corks break. Every cork which is more than 5 more expensive bottle from this winery. I feel I'm owed a couple cases from this winery. Field recording is more advanced and more artsy and unique and less than half the price. We travel to Spain, Portugal, and other parts of Europe that is closer and cheaper by flights on the regular. I hope these facts helped educate further customers and the business of this winery stop scamming and taking advantage of people."

"If you were looking for something off the beaten path that’s also extremely special this is your Winery! This family run Vineyard has spectacular Cabs and Zinfandels. We met the owner, his son and the wine maker at a tasting event in the Presidio this year. Out of all the winery at that event, HowellMountain Vineyards stood out to us. Again they did not disappoint at the Krug Winery Howell Mountain tasting event this summer. This winery is worth the drive! I’m looking forward to visit with them again! Debra M"

Golden hour, both sunrise and sunset, offers beautiful light for photography. Mid-day can be harsh, but the dramatic mountain landscape is often striking regardless of the time.
This depends on the winery's policy. Some may allow it during tours, while others restrict photography in production areas for hygiene or operational reasons.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is great for landscapes and details. A wide-angle lens can capture the expansive views, and a prime lens is good for low-light tasting room shots.

The Unique Terroir of Howell Mountain
The elevation also plays a crucial role. At 1,400 to 2,600 feet above sea level, the temperature fluctuations are more pronounced, aiding in the development of balanced ripeness and phenolic maturity. This elevated position also means less humidity and fewer pests, contributing to healthier vines and cleaner fruit. Wineries like Cade Estate and Outpost Wines are prime examples of producers harnessing this exceptional terroir to craft distinctive mountain wines.
Exploring Howell Mountain is an opportunity to taste wines that are a true reflection of their environment. The wines often possess a certain wildness and intensity, a testament to the rugged beauty and challenging conditions of the mountain. For wine enthusiasts seeking wines with depth, character, and a story to tell, Howell Mountain offers an unparalleled experience.
