Last week we explored an easy loop trail in Aptos at the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. It’s the perfect beginner trail and great for teaching the kids how to hike. The Old Growth Trail is 1.3 miles although we ended up hiking about 1.7 with some added detours. This is a great chance to see beautiful redwoods and for the kids to play in the river. We made sure to bring lunch and stopped ha...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning redwood forests, serene creek areas, and the picturesque Maple Falls. The park offers a peaceful escape with well-maintained trails suitable for various hiking levels. Some find the parking and cash-only fee system a bit unusual, but the natural beauty generally outweighs these minor inconveniences.

"Did an evening hike - Terrace Trail to Aptos Ranch Trail - took 1.5 hours - 3.6 miles. Loved it.

Parking is a little funny. There was no attendant so we had to put $8 cash in an envelope and write on the envelope that we dropped it and put the matching ticket on our dash. I’ve traveled to many other states and countries and have never experienced this. Left $10 as i had no change. Just a heads up for future visitors."

Lucas Litwin

"This is a beautiful, lush coastal redwood forest with lots of trails, though I've only explored the southern area so far. It's just outside Aptos, south of Santa Cruz.

Trails are well maintained, and there's little poison oak in the areas I've been to. The creek is the highlight for me - mossy, fern-dotted cliffs, still water, jumping fish. It's relatively easily accessible from the parking area near the entrance, though there are some steps to descend and a bit of a slope.

If you read about the Advocate Tree, please note that it's now fallen, but you can still visit it. It lived for over 1,000 years!

Past the creek, the trails get steeper and narrower. Everything was green and beautiful in late June and was a joy to explore. The southern area lends itself well to wandering (with a map of course).

As always, bring sunscreen and a hat (though the trails are largely shady), plus water and snacks.

Parking was a little tough, but that's not unexpected for hiking on a Saturday in June. I was fortunate though and only had to wait a few minutes before a spot opened up. Entrance fee is $8 at the time I'm writing this.

I had a wonderful time here and highly recommend the park."

Kelly Byrd

"Beautiful scenery and very easy hikes from the entrance station to the picnic area. Very gentle inclines for the most part. The trails branch off and reconverrge in some places making it easy to revisit and get a new experience.

The creek is absolutely beautiful."
