Reviews Summary
Georgia Tech is lauded for its rigorous academics and strong career outcomes, particularly in STEM fields. While the campus is generally safe and offers good amenities, some visitors and students find the administrative processes, especially tuition deadlines, to be stressful and challenging to navigate.
"When my son started the summer term as an out of state freshman (national merit finalist) at GT, the due date for the tuition was immediate after registration. Of course, this does not accommodate any parent paying with a 529 plan, since the 529 distribution check often takes 7-10 days to make it to the GT bursar's office. GT began sending my son threatening emails starting the day after registration that they were going to block his computer access to the school, fine him, then dismiss him from school. This was every day his entire his first week in college. I called the Bursar's office multiple times that week before actually getting to speak to a person. This person was no help and told me "that's just the way it is" and suggested that I pay with a credit card so it's immediate (with the 529 check already on the way so I'd be paying twice). All this time they were still threatening us that my son was about to be kicked out of school. It was so stressful for both of us that I called the GT president's office and left a voicemail explaining the problem and begging for a call back to help rectify this situation. I received no call back at all from the president's office. My son then went to the Bursar's office in person and they told us that if our 529 would send an email verifying that a tuition check was on the way then they would let him stay in school. Our state's 529 plan did this immediately (great customer service--the opposite of GT). This situation would have never happened if GT just had appropriate tuition due date after summer registration for freshman, but they make no effort to fix this problem. My son is now a senior and we are going through the same mess again with the GT Bursar's office. Senior design registration for engineering students has a later registration than everything else. I paid the GT tuition bill from his 529 plan the same day I received it. However, the due day for his tuition is less than 1 week from the time the bill was sent. Now GT is again sending threatening emails to my son (who is suppose to graduate this December). I have called the Bursar's office twice and cannot speak to a person and no one will call me back. This is ridiculous and I can't believe the people in charge of GT bursar's office can't do better. GT needs to adjust it's tuition due dates to account for 529 plans. I will always give GT a 1 star rating because of this, no matter how good the school is otherwise. This is extremely stressful, unacceptable, and easily fixed (if GT actually cared). In addition, my daughters went to Duke and UAB, and both of those universities had appropriate tuition deadline dates so paying with 529 plan worked out fine. This is exclusively a GT problem."

"Daughter attends GA Tech and she loves it! She spends a lot of time studying in the library as the curriculum is very rigorous. The campus is always clean, and we feel safe every time we visit even though the campus sits in Atlanta. If you are instate you should definitely visit to see if it is a good fit for your child."

"This public institute of technology is a comprehensive university, with academic programs in engineering, sciences, computer science, business, architecture, and liberal arts. It's not just an engineering college anymore, and hasn't been for decades. It's a large institution with about 20,000 undergraduates and 20,000 graduate students engaged in an exceptionally rigorous academic mission. The campus itself is mostly a collection of nondescript modern buildings, but the historic core (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) is a park-like oasis. The school has a large and thriving athletic program, and also includes many on-campus artistic and cultural activities. If you're interested in being a student, or you're just looking for a leisurely stroll, give this busy campus a visit."
