Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Bahia Honda State Park's stunning natural beauty, particularly the views from the historic bridge and its serene beaches. While some note an overwhelming smell from sargassum seaweed and occasional water quality concerns at certain beaches, the park's clean facilities, wildlife, and breathtaking sunsets make it a highly recommended stop in the Florida Keys.

"I stopped here for a bit on the drive down to Key West. It was beautiful and peaceful. There was a terrible smell which is overwhelming when you first arrive, presumably from all the sea grass, but you get used to it pretty quickly. I wasn’t expecting to see all the sea grass piled up along the beaches, but the signs explained it’s an important part of the habitat. The view was pretty and I saw some lizards and butterflies. It was a nice place to stretch my legs. Note that there is a small fee to enter the park."

Elaine Toennies

"Absolutely amazing campground! We spent a week here and even chose it as the place for our wedding photos—it was that beautiful. The location is unbeatable, with sweeping views of the bay and the most breathtaking sunsets you could ever ask for. Every evening felt magical. 🌅

The campground itself is excellent: clean sites, helpful camping services, a store on-site for fresh coffee in the morning, a private bay swim area, plus miles of biking and hiking trails. We stayed in sites 75, 76, and 77—each had stunning bay views, though swimming isn’t allowed directly at these spots. Bring bikes or a golf cart; we biked everywhere and loved it.

Bahia Honda sits perfectly between Big Pine Key (home of the Key deer) and Marathon, both unique and worth exploring. Public transportation makes it easy and affordable—just $4 to get to most of the Keys.

Yes, you’ll want bug spray and sunblock to really enjoy your stay, and the restrooms can be humid (Florida life!), but none of that takes away from the incredible experience. Between the crystal-clear waters, the wildlife, the peaceful nights, and those jaw-dropping sunsets, this is a place you’ll never forget. We can’t wait to come back!"

"Beautiful state park , the water is really nice and calm too. I would have liked to explore some of the other beaches in the area but this was to be it for this day. The water was really nice and calm and clean . We enjoyed the visit. The changing rooms and showered were such a plus."

Originally part of the Florida East Coast Railway, it was later converted into the Overseas Highway. Today, a significant portion of it stands within the park, offering a unique historical and scenic experience.

The climb to the top rewards you with unparalleled panoramic views of the Florida Keys, the turquoise waters, and the surrounding natural beauty.TikTok It's a fantastic spot for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset, and provides a tangible connection to the history of the Keys' development.

Understanding Bahia Honda's Natural Beaches

Bahia Honda State Park is celebrated for its natural, undeveloped beaches, which contribute to its unique charm. Unlike manicured resort beaches, Bahia Honda's shores are often adorned with sargassum seaweed, a natural phenomenon that, while sometimes creating an odor, is crucial for the marine ecosystem.TikTok This natural carpeting provides habitat and nutrients for various sea creatures.

The park features two primary beaches: Calusa Beach on the north side, offering calm, shallow waters ideal for wading and excellent views of the old railroad bridge, and Sandspur Beach on the south side, a more classic stretch of soft sand with clear blue waters perfect for swimming.TikTok The park also has a private bay swim area near the campground, providing another safe and serene option for water activities.

Visitors are encouraged to appreciate these beaches for their untamed beauty. While some reviews mention disappointment with the seaweed or the absence of beach shades (likely destroyed by hurricanes), embracing the natural state of Bahia Honda's coastline is key to enjoying its authentic Florida Keys experience.Reddit

Camping at Bahia Honda: A Unique Experience

Camping at Bahia Honda State Park is an experience many travelers describe as unforgettable, with sites often booked a year in advance due to high demand.TikTok The park offers campsites that allow visitors to stay mere steps from the shoreline, providing immediate access to the natural beauty of the Keys.

Campers can enjoy a range of amenities, including clean sites, helpful services, an on-site store for essentials, and access to a private bay swim area. Many sites boast stunning bay views, though direct swimming might not be possible from every spot. Bringing bikes or golf carts is recommended for easy exploration of the park's trails and facilities.Reddit

While the restrooms can be humid (a common Florida characteristic), the overall camping experience is highly praised for its connection to nature, peaceful nights, and the opportunity to witness jaw-dropping sunsets. It's an ideal base for exploring nearby Big Pine Key and Marathon, making it a truly immersive Keys adventure.Reddit
