From railroad to recreation: Banks Vernonia State Trail is a nationally recognized spot...
This is a great cycling day trip. Start at Banks, meander through the farm fields and woods, end at Vernonia for a brew and lunch. Then back with a good downhill run a few miles before Banks. Around 42 miles round trip. Every visitor I've taken on this has enjoyed it.

Good route on Banks Vernonia bike trail with kids?
Headed to the coast this weekend and looking for a good bike trail to do with a 5 year old that can do about 5 miles. Banks Vernonia looks good, but I am not sure what the best stretch is any ideas? Also very interested in other compatible bike trails on the coast between…
Places to run 8+ miles in Hillsboro?
Hi! I'm looking for public places to run that are relatively flat where I won't be interrupted by traffic lights, etc. I've never had this issue before, so it's difficult to know where to start looking! I usually go to Planet Fitness on Tualatin to run, and I like them, but…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Banks-Vernonia State Trail's beautiful, shaded forest setting and the exhilarating experience of crossing its historic trestles and bridges. The paved surface is generally well-maintained, though some rough patches require caution. While the trail offers a good workout with some challenging climbs, it's also accessible for families and offers a peaceful escape into nature.
"Really enjoyed my bike ride to Veronia Lake on this trail, fully paved, through a forest, you’ll be climbing for a good chunk of it, with a couple of really short but steep sections, with a loop around the lake and a pit stop at El Amigo food truck, it was around 44 miles total, with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Not too many people on a Saturday afternoon, but enough so didn’t feel completely alone. Park across the street at Five Star Builders if the lot is full on weekends, only on weekends."

"This is a beautiful, mostly shaded trail with only a few moderate climbs and one significant section (around 13%) with switchbacks. There are signs posted to walk bicycles because of the steep grade and tight corners. Several trestles and bridges make for an exhilarating experience and provide some awesome views! The trail is heavily forested which provides shade but has lifted the asphalt in many places. Watch out for the painted spots on the trail which are warnings of lifted, cracked, or sunken asphalt and be sure to slow down for those areas. Going too fast over them can be very jarring or even cause a fall. There are a couple of trailheads/parking lots with restrooms between Banks & Vernonia."

"This trail is pretty awesome! It's long enough for anyone really, if you go all the way through into Vernonia; it's about 22 miles or so. I use it for my long runs! It's uninterrupted - some choppy asphalt areas, but are well marked for your safety. Lots bike riders, everyone is awesome."
