On March 25 1844, Oak Hill Cemetery was officially organized, serving as a resting place for the multitudes who have had a hand in Battle Creek’s past. Most of Battle Creek's pioneers are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, including James and Ellen White, co-founders of the Seventh Day Adventist church, Sojourner Truth, Abolitionist and Equal Rights Campaigner. Also, W.K. Kellogg and his brother John Harvey Kellogg, C.W. Post, and Bill Knapp. Tourists world-wide visit these historic grave sites each year. There are at least 480 identified Civil War veterans buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, including two Medal of Honor recipients (Charles M. Holton and Edwin VanWinkle) ) and one Confederate veteran (Dr. James H. Reed).
