Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Ricketts Glen State Park, particularly the stunning Falls Trail with its 22 waterfalls, calling it a 'natural gem' and 'unforgettable.' The park's beauty, especially in fall, and dog-friendly trails are frequently praised. However, some reviewers note that park facilities, specifically restrooms, can be poorly maintained.

"A wonderful park. Very beautiful, especially in the fall. Highly recommend coming to just walk the beach trail for a more casual stroll in nature. There is also a day use area with picnic facilities and a beach. Various hiking trails are around to acess the park's many waterfalls. Adams Falls is one of the waterfalls and is one that can be accessed from a small rocky climb/hike. Somw trails close in the winter for safety due to the nature of the hikes so make sure to plan accordingly and come in a good season for hiking if you plan to do the falls trail. The beach trail is generally easier and is just a nice walk around the woods and lake. You won't see any water falls on that trail but it gives year round access to the park and is easier for those not looking for a big hike. The beach is open in the summer to swimming but closes the rest of the year. You can still lake along the beach trail but not enter the water. There was a volleyball net up on the beach the day I went. I don't remember seeing that as a recreation activity on the park site so it was a nice surprise. There is also camping (tent, rv, and cabin) but I didn't stay so I can't speak for the camping but still it's nice to note that it is a great option for those wanting to get away to nature. Boats are allowed on the lake and access is provided."

Amusement Unknown

"Ricketts Glen State Park is truly a natural gem and an unforgettable hiking destination. I recently explored the Falls Trail, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding hiking experiences I’ve ever had. The trail is beautifully maintained, and it immerses you in the heart of the park’s most stunning scenery. What makes this hike so special is the sheer number and variety of waterfalls along the way—22 named falls, each with its own character and charm. From the graceful cascades to the dramatic plunges, every turn of the trail offers a new breathtaking view.

The trail itself is moderately challenging, with some rocky and steep sections, but it’s well worth the effort. The combination of rushing water, lush greenery, and cool forest air creates a serene and refreshing atmosphere. I especially appreciated how close the trail allows you to get to many of the falls; in several spots, you can stand right at the base and feel the mist on your face. It’s the kind of immersive experience that makes you forget the outside world and simply enjoy the beauty of nature.

Along the hike, there are plenty of spots to pause and take in the scenery, making it both a photographer’s dream and a peaceful retreat for anyone who loves the outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a memorable adventure, the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen delivers. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking natural beauty, tranquility, and a bit of adventure."

"Never have I experience an amazing hike with so many waterfalls in one big hike. Talk about the level power it requires to handle this hike but the views, water, the amazing greenery mixed in. Even the drive getting there is worth it. But i recommend this is a summer to enjoy with friends & family."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Falls Trail

The Falls Trail is the crown jewel of Ricketts Glen State Park, a 7.2-mile loop that immerses you in a world of cascading water. This trail is renowned for its 22 named waterfalls, ranging from delicate trickles to powerful plunges like Ganoga Falls, the park's tallest at 94 feet. Instagram+1 The trail itself is a journey, featuring steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, and numerous wooden steps and bridges. It's a moderately challenging hike that requires good physical condition and sturdy footwear. Reddit

Many visitors opt to start the loop from the Lake Rose Trailhead, following the trail counter-clockwise. This approach is often recommended as it allows you to tackle some of the steeper sections heading downhill, and it ensures you encounter the majority of the waterfalls in sequence. Instagram Be prepared for the possibility of wet conditions, especially after rain, as the trail can become slippery. The mist from the falls can also add to the dampness, so waterproof gear might be a good idea depending on the weather. Instagram

While the full loop is a significant undertaking, there are shorter options. A 3.2-mile section allows you to see 18 waterfalls, starting from the Lake Rose parking area. Instagram Regardless of the length you choose, the Falls Trail offers an unforgettable experience, combining strenuous activity with unparalleled natural beauty. Remember to check the park's website for any trail closures before your visit, as conditions can change seasonally. Reddit

Best Times to Experience Ricketts Glen

Ricketts Glen State Park offers distinct beauty throughout the year, but certain seasons truly shine. Spring is an excellent time to visit, particularly in April and May, when the waterfalls are at their most powerful due to snowmelt and spring rains. The lush greenery begins to emerge, creating a vibrant backdrop for the cascading water. Instagram+1

Autumn is arguably the most popular season, transforming the park into a breathtaking spectacle of fall foliage. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the changing leaves against the backdrop of the waterfalls create a postcard-perfect scene. Instagram This beauty, however, draws significant crowds, so visiting on a weekday or early in the morning is advisable if you prefer a more tranquil experience. Reddit

Summer offers warm weather perfect for enjoying Lake Jean, with opportunities for swimming and boating. While the waterfalls may be less robust than in spring, the park remains a beautiful escape. Winter can be magical with snow and ice transforming the landscape, but the Falls Trail often closes due to hazardous conditions. Reddit Always check the park's official website for current conditions and potential closures, especially if planning a winter visit.

Camping and Accommodations

For those looking to extend their visit, Ricketts Glen State Park offers a range of camping options. The park features a campground with sites for tent camping, RV camping (including sites with full hookups), and cabins. Reddit Reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons like summer and fall foliage. The campground provides a convenient base for exploring the park's trails and attractions, allowing for early morning hikes before the day-use crowds arrive. Reddit

Campers can expect amenities such as restrooms and showers. Some reviews mention updated loops with spacious and relatively level sites. Reddit It's worth noting that bears have been known to visit the campground, so practicing proper food storage and following park guidelines for bear safety is essential. Reddit Beyond the park's camping facilities, visitors can find lodging in nearby towns, offering alternatives for those who prefer hotels or bed and breakfasts.
