"More to the park then just the awesome museums. While the trails are relatively short if you retrace and take multiple routes you can get in a great hike while seeing some really interesting sites. Massachusetts state parks really are wicked pissah!!😁"
Jason Reilly
"Dighton Rock State Park was a truly bizarre experience made better by Joe the park ranger. A large rock covered in petroglyphs sits inside a tiny museum building on the edge of the Taunton River. The signage inside the museum told the convoluted tale of European historians and linguists attempting to decipher the language on the rock with attempts made by English, Scandinavian, and Portuguese translators each with their own political agenda."

"It's a nice state park, kind of in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately they Dighton Rock is in a cement building and closed for Covid. It doesn't seem like it's routinely open as there is a sign in the parking lot with a number to call to request access. There were to parks trucks in the parking lot when I visited... they don't allow swimming... so I guess you can go for a walk here."

The Mystery of Dighton Rock
Theories and Interpretations
Early interpretations often leaned towards European origins, fueled by colonial-era biases. However, more recent scholarship acknowledges the strong possibility of Native American authorship, with some carvings potentially dating back thousands of years. The complexity of the symbols, including pictograms and what appear to be inscriptions, has led to various attempts at decipherment, none of which have achieved universal acceptance. The rock's story is as much about the history of interpretation as it is about the carvings themselves.
