What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Ship Island's stunningly clear waters and beautiful white sand beaches, often calling it a hidden gem. The historical Fort Massachusetts adds a unique dimension to the natural beauty. However, some reviewers note issues with beach cleanliness due to washed-up debris and plastic trash, and strongly advise rigorous sun protection to avoid severe sunburn.
"You just have to see it – sea crabs, sandpipers, dolphins, and scallops. And of course, the amazingly clear, warm water is perfect for swimming endlessly. But remember the harsh sun – be sure to bring sunscreen and wear a T-shirt when swimming. Although I don't have very sensitive skin and was wearing a T-shirt, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (before the ferry departed), I got sunburned on my arms and legs and had to spend the next day recovering."

"What a wonderful place it was! Absolutely stunning scenery, pristine white sand beaches, friendly staff, and great history of Fort Massachusetts. Their ranger Tim was very friendly and fun, too."
Dmitry Zinger
"Beaches are narrow and full of drift wood and jingle shells and some shallow spots are full of plastic trash that floated in from everywhere. You would think the Parks Service would clean that up from time to time . Go protected from the sun or get a beach umbrella because you will burn .
If you want to snorkel try the shallow water on the side of the Island that the ship dropped you off at . It waves were too rough and merky on the beach side plus the little snorkeling I did manage to do I saw nothing but sand . The shallow side had lots of fish and calm water."
