What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Birmingham Botanical Gardens as a beautiful, serene, and surprisingly free attraction. The diverse themed gardens, particularly the Japanese Garden and Rose Garden, are highlights, offering picturesque settings for relaxation and photography. While the Conservatory could use some plant care attention, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many calling it an underrated gem.
"This was my first visit to the gardens, and as a newer transplant to Alabama, I couldn’t have asked for a lovelier introduction. I visited on a Saturday morning around 10 a.m., and there was a smaller presence; not overwhelming, just the way I like it.
Even without exploring the entire property, we spent nearly two hours wandering the grounds. The rose garden is especially captivating, a fragrant and colorful haven that invites you to linger. The greenhouse, while charming and full of character, could use a bit of extra care for some of its plants though.
The Japanese-inspired section, with its graceful bridges, bamboo, and koi pond, was a highlight — tranquil, picturesque, and thoughtfully designed. Every corner of the gardens seems to whisper an invitation to photographers; in fact, we noticed a family having professional portraits taken during our visit. (For those planning similar sessions, it’s worth reviewing the venue’s photography guidelines in advance- see photo)
Before leaving, we stopped by the gift shop, which was an absolute delight, filled to the brim with exquisite, one-of-a-kind treasures. I could have easily spent another hour browsing its elegant displays.
What a hidden gem, tucked away in the quiet residential streets of beautiful Mountain Brook. A visit here feels like a step into serenity itself."

"Great place for a two hour visit before a flight. Fairly easy to get to and lots of free parking. This is a pretty large park with a lot of different areas with various themes or regions of plant species.
My favorites were the Japanese Garden and the indoor tropical gardens. But there are paths everywhere, water features, and a lake with Koi and turtles!
Nice gift shop that is more like a garden center. Plenty of bathrooms. And this whole place is free! Incredible!"

"Birmingham Botanical Gardens is an amazing place that features more natural beauty than I could hope to describe in a single review. Rose gardens, Japanese gardens, vegetable gardens, ponds, and so much more are here, and everything has obviously been cared for by folks who take real pride in their job. The Conservatory/Greenhouse is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.
If you're looking to clear your head and enjoy the abundant beauty here, I'd recommend showing up early on a weekday. There are plenty of walking trails to explore.
The on-site gift shop has something for everyone at any budget. They also offer lots of plants and garden decorations. There is a map available at the entrance as well as a QR code to a map to help you navigate the grounds. Bathrooms are available and are fully functional.
I'm already looking forward to the next time!"
