I'm looking into hiking Baldy in the next month or so, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips/information about the hike itself. I'm decently used to scrambling, and I've hiked the M about 100 times, and the ridge above it about 20, so I know the beginning very well, I was…

While some find the latter half steep, the well-maintained, interconnected trails offer a rewarding experience for hikers, bikers, and families. "Great hike to savor the trees & shade-cover a good portion of the trip. We went up to the first lookouts & back which was an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. A few respectful mountain-bikers, but mostly people & dogs on foot. Look busy on weekends, but we did a weekday morning. Wild-flowers were beautiful during our late June hike."

"This trail takes you up into the wild foliage of the forest outside of Bozeman. It is beautifully natural. There are some steep grades in a few places, plenty of switchbacks and there are narrow steep elevated dropoffs at some points. It is well traveled expect others. Keep your dog on a leash& please clean up after them(so much left behind dog poop), wear good shoes with traction. We made it to the first peak and I was done (90 minutes in) and the dog was tired but they are sweeping views of Bozeman (we had a hazy day), it also interconnects with longer hikes to other parts of the mountain on top. Water and a hat are recommended and be aware of other forest creatures."

"This is technically the only trail I hike in the Valley currently, I like the overall challenge, the trail starts pretty gradually, the first 2.4 miles are mostly forested and under cover, it's also the only area where you may encounter black bears, but they're mostly active during dawn and dusk, and during the night. Around 2.4 miles you'll hit the first ridge overlooking the valley, from there it slowly works its way up for another 2.2 miles where you'll encounter a stone cairn around mile 4.6 where there trail splits in 3, the rightmost I've been told goes to the M, the middle follows the ridge east towards the peaks, and the left is a spur that goes slightly north and eventually climbs steeply south to link up with the ridgeline trail. The ridgeline trail meets up with the higher trail to the M around 7 miles, the false peaks are only a short climb farther to the north, Baldy Peak is actually the third of the peaks and it's slightly northeast of the two smooth topped peaks if I'm reading the topographical map right."
