Just another long adventure reel that took me hours to make but nobody will watch 🤣… . Join us for a hike up the Lundy Canyon trail to 20 Lakes Basin in the Eastern Sierras. This trail starts out as a very moderate trail leading to a beautiful little waterfall after several miles. Once past the falls the trail steepens and as it heads up the narrow canyon becomes quite precarious. This stretch of ...

Reviews Summary

Lundy Canyon is celebrated for its stunning fall foliage, particularly its golden aspen groves and picturesque waterfalls. Visitors appreciate the serene beaver ponds and the dramatic mountain scenery. However, the rough access road and limited parking are significant drawbacks, and some upper trails can be dangerous.

"Lundy Canyon is one of the best place to see the fall color in East Sierra. The trailhead is about 1.5 miles from Lundy Lake. It is a unpaved, bumpy road full of large potholes. Four wheel or all wheel SUV is strongly recommended for this road. The small parking lot has limited spaces. It is filled up quickly in the hot season.

The trail is about 2 miles from trailhead the waterfall, with total elevation of 800 feet. Most people will turn around after reaching the waterfall. An additional one mile with 1200 feet is needed for reaching the Lake Helen. Due to the recent land slide, the trail is quite dangerous, you shall avoid it unless your are good climber.

After about a half mile up the trail, you will see the lower Lundy Falls in the faraway hill. The whole hillside around the waterfall was covered with aspen tree with vibrant yellow color. After that you will cross several streams, and at about one mile, you will reach several small ponds filled with water from Mill creek. Beavers build dam around these ponds. The is the beginning of the upper canyon, you will go thorough an large aspen grove, there is not much elevation gain in this section, till you reach the bottom of the upper waterfall.

You may see the snow drifts even in late October. At the top of the waterfall, there is a small rocky area you can sit or lay down, and have a small picnic.

If you want to push on, be sure you did not carry heavy backpack, it will be quite difficult to keep balance on this section of trail, and can be outright dangerous to go down later on. As you get close to Lundy Pass, the trees thin out and the trail is taken over by large chunks of talus. Once you pass the lundy
pass, you wills see Lake Helen and 20 lakes basin."

"Lundy Canyon Hike, Mono County

Hiked ~6 miles for a picturesque hike with fall foliage, dramatic mountain views with a series of waterfalls and even some snow!
There was also a meadow of Aspen trees that had fallen over due to an avalanche, but interestingly many still had some leaves on them
This was one of my favorite hikes on this trip. Parking is a bit limited.

"Top 5 hikes in the 395 corridor between Bridgeport and June Lakes. In Fall, you'll be blown away. Make sure and walk all the way to the back of the canyon to the waterfall. Old growth Aspens, the sound of quaking leaves, standing dead trees in motionless ponds, streams flowing gently, and whispering wind gently blowing on you. And no people. You should go."
