Reviews Summary

Visitors find Sidney Lanier Oak Park a historically significant and culturally rich stop, particularly for its connection to the poet Sidney Lanier and his famous work, 'The Marshes of Glynn.' While some note the modern surroundings detract slightly, the park offers a peaceful moment of reflection and a chance to appreciate literary history. It's a recommended brief visit for those in the area. Reddit

"I was stopping at historic live oaks on my way up from FL, and this one was one of the least impressive but one of the coolest given the cultural and historical context. Sidney Lanier, famous Georgian poet and former Confederate soldier, moved down to Brunswick after catching consumption, a lung infection now known as tuberculosis, at the notorious Union prison camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. Underneath this very oak, he wrote his most famous and critically-acclaimed piece, Marshes of Glenn, which ones came right up to the tree but now are a bit away because of US-17/Ocean Highway. It’s tough for one to put them self in his shoes, so I would recommend going to the nearby overlook park to do that, since the cars and power lines take away a bit from the experience. Nevertheless, it’s a neat spot with a little plaque and all. Would recommend a visit if in the area, also check out the Lover’s Oak nearby."

"The plaque here reads:
"Neath this gracious tree stood Sidney Lanier and under inspiration of the oak and the marsh wrote 'The Marshes of Glynn'"
"I will heartily lay me a-hold on the greatness of God
Oh, like to the greatness of God is the greatness within
The range of the marshes, the liberal Marshes of Glynn"
Lanier, born at Macon, GA, 1842. Died 1881"

"Cool little stop off when you’re in the area."
