Had the opportunity to attend a tomb sweeping festival this weekend. Each year, the Mai Wah Museum in Butte, Montana hosts a Qingming festival in the Chinese section of the cemetery in Butte. Participants clean the headstones, make offerings, and pay their respects. 🪦🌸🪦

TIL that the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in the US is not in New York or San Francisco, but Butte, Montana. Pekin Noodle Parlor opened in 1911 and is still open today.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Mai Wah Museum's incredible historical experience and the meticulous preservation of original artifacts within its beautifully restored building. Many highlight the unique opportunity to see a mercantile frozen in time, offering an authentic glimpse into Butte's Asian heritage. While some note the raw state of certain areas, the overall sentiment is that it's a worthwhile visit for history lovers.

"Incredible history experience! They have done amazing restoration so far, but much of it is beautifully raw upstairs, still. Downstairs they have it set up exactly as it was when open for business. All of the artifacts, packages of herbs and so many items, are original artifacts from this mercantile. When they shut down, they closed the doors with everything intact, so its all available to view. There are beautiful banners with stories and pix about the family, the history and how more history was unearthed. We'll worth visiting if you enjoy history."

Shelley Peterson

"Was visiting for a research project and to help translate some artifacts. I was impressed with how knowledgeable the people running the museum were about the artifacts and how they went to great lengths to ensure the history of the Chinese community in Butte is preserved."

Rex Wu

"A must see when it reopens in the spring…opened briefly for Chinese new year…great preservation of Chinese history and all done by non Asian community"
