Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Tule Elk State Natural Reserve a peaceful and meaningful stop, offering a chance to see a once-endangered species thriving. While elk sightings aren't guaranteed, the scenic beauty and well-maintained facilities are appreciated. Some note the abundance of ground squirrels as a minor hazard.

"I visited the Tule Elk Reserve while on a trip up to Sacramento. While I didn't see any elk (I forgot to pack binoculars and they have a large area to roam) it was still a beautiful and scenic spot to stop for a rest and a radio break while traveling from LA to Sacramento. I got to the park around mid morning and had the place to myself. The restrooms were very clean, as were the AMPLE picnic tables and viewing areas.

One word of caution, WATCH YOUR STEP! They have a massive ground squirrel problem in the park area and they've created a LOT of holes that you could step in if you aren't paying attention.

As a ham radio operator, this park is part of the "Parks on the Air" system (US-3583) and was nice an easy to setup and operate from. There was nothing to generate interference nearby, so a very low to non-existent noise floor. The solar conditions were not great that day, but I still managed to make contacts in Washington, Oregon, across the midwest and as far east as Minnesota.

While operating, I did get a visit from the park ranger who was very kind, cordial, and gave me some great information about the park and where and when I might see some elk. She was a pleasure to talk with.

All in all, I would definitely come here again. It's a nice place to visit and plenty of space to stretch and walk around on a long drive and you can see some wildlife (I did see coyotes and plenty of ground squirrels)."

"This is a nice place to see the Tule elk and during different seasons. They even offer safari days. Where you can drive your own vehicle into the reserve for a chance to see them in their natural element. I have brought my kids here on a few occasions. And have seen them without and then with their antlers. They also have a lookout platform for easier viewing. There are covered picnic spots with parking and restrooms. This place is ada accessible. And even has a covered large group picnic area. Fee is $5 per vehicle (cash or card) via pay station at front entrance."

Rachael Williams

"This is a cool lonely place. We got to see the Elk and we even saw some babies. The males made lots of noise which was really cool. When we got there, their was only one person and then we had the whole place alone for about half an hour and we left. But sadly we did see a hurt owl and I gave them a call to come out and take care of it. But such a cool place to see some Elk."
