Reviews Summary

Byron Bergen Swamp offers a unique natural experience with opportunities to see rare orchids and learn from a dedicated caretaker. Visitors praise the beauty of the swamp and the caretaker's knowledge. However, some reviewers have had negative experiences due to poorly marked trails and strict enforcement of rules, leading to feelings of being harassed.

"I took a quick peek at the area for a potential field trip next spring. You to not being dressed for hiking, I didnโ€™t go very far in and on my way out I was greeted by the caretaker, Mike. He was a great guy and he took me a little ways in to show me an orchid that a Brockport professor has sent him pictures of. He told me a bunch of information about the swamp and itโ€™s history. I will be going back there this weekend to hike all the trails! If you go, make sure that you pay attention to all of the signs and take nothing but pictures and leave nothing behind. This area is protected. Make sure you wear a bug spray also!"

"This is in response to Christy:
The trick is to enter at the extremely visible large marked entrance with all the bright and visible signs, not by entering through the blocked off area. The trail is marked and maintained, the area blocked off is not a trail and isn't marked. Blocked off areas are blocked off for a reason, they are not trails. Considering this is protected land and is privately owned, entering the blocked off areas is trespassing and with all the endangered species the rules are enforced. They ask that you stay on trail and obey the signage at the entrance and enjoy the property. All rules are well stated and very visible as well as being written and with symbols to help acknowledge those that may not be able to read. The caretaker/management records every interaction as well as ensuring they cameras on the trails are checked frequently. If you have had a poor experience with him its because you weren't following the rules, laws, or respecting the property. Please read the rules prior to entering and do not remove, agitate, or harrass anything on the property. The leaving of anything behind is forbidden as well. This is privately owned, protected land.. not public lands owned by taxpayers. It's for people walking in, not on bikes, atvs, or anything else that requires wheels. Groups over 6 need consent from BSPS and absolutely no pets are allowed on the property other than the dog that lives there that comes with the caretaker as well as being a service to the property.
Take only pictures, leave only footprints
Please, stay on the marked trail
Christy was off trail, trespassing, and when approached she shot off a loaded mouth. I was 10-20 yards ahead of her and her company and made sure they exited safely. It's not my fault she ignored the 3 signs she walked passed. That's on her and there is zero excuse. She's very lucky I didn't call the law especially after the verbal abuse I took."

"Brought my family out for a nice walk to see some nature. The trails and signs are not marked or poorly marked. Got harassed by land management. He was rude and wouldn't listen that we thought we were following the trail. Threatened us with felonies and called the police. Would not show us the correct path and left us just standing there. Would not recommend visiting to anyone."
