One of My Favorite Hikes...Hands Down!
If you're anywhere near the Wild Basin area in Colorado, do yourself a favor and make time for the hike to Calypso Falls. I've done a lot of hikes, and this one is an all-time favorite! Only 1.6 miles from the trailhead and worth every step!
Remember, as of this posting, you must have a reservation for timed entry or you must arrive before 5am to get in and yes, parking is a premium!
From the moment we hit the trail, we were surrounded by the sound of cascading water. Seriously, you can hear it almost the entire way...like nature’s own playlist playing just for us. The trail itself is easy to moderate, with just enough rocky terrain to make you feel like you earned the views but not so much that it takes away from the joy of the journey.
And those views? Wow. The trail winds through tall pines, singing aspens, across wooden bridges, and up to the most beautiful waterfall. Calypso Cascades is absolutely worth every step. Rushing water tumbling down over big mossy rocks, sunlight filtering through the trees...pure Colorado magic.
I brought a hammock (pro tip!) and strung it up just off the trail near the falls. Took the most peaceful nap with the sound of rushing water as the background. I mean... is there anything better than a trail nap with a view? This moment will stay with me for a lifetime!
Truly one of the most amazing days of our entire trip. Wildflowers, cool breezes, happy hikers, and that constant sound of water. It felt like the kind of day you want to bottle up and keep forever.
Highly recommend this hike if you're looking for something scenic, peaceful, and just the right amount of effort. 10/10 would do it again...especially with my hammock in tow."

A reasonable hike from the Wild Basin trailhead isn’t too challenging. The elevation gain is moderate while you parallel the river which offers a soundscape of rushing water white noise. While hiking in June I enjoyed the snow capped peaks that poked out from various vantage points along the trail.
The access road to the trailhead might be challenging for small vehicles that could risk bottoming out in some of the ruts and holes. Take is slowly and pick your route carefully and you will find it is worth the effort."
