Graveyards can be the PERFECT location for a gothic or witchy photoshoot, but we wanna be careful not to disrespect the dead or cause even more pain to those who have lost loved ones by stepping all over them with the entitlement and insensitivity of an "influencer" (derogatory). This is how I like to show respect and empathy when taking photos at a cemetery, but I'm sure there are others who hav...

Graveyard Fields is being a little overachiever this year with significant pops of color already! 🍁🍂 But don’t panic if your fall plans aren’t until October- most of the mountains are still a dingy shade of Army green here in North Carolina 🤢 📍Graveyard Fields. Visitors rave about Graveyard Fields, highlighting its stunning waterfalls and the refreshing swimming holes, especially at the lower falls. The fall foliage is a major draw, with many calling it a highlight of their trip. "Highlight of our trip! Not the easiest trail to the upper falls but not the hardest either. It was a moderate hike and very well maintained and marked. Facilities were clean also which is nice for the ladies. Honestly no complaints this place was awesome. The swimming hole at the lower falls was by far the best part. Water was cold and refreshing great place for a hike or a picnic. Recommend giving yourself at least 3 hours to fully enjoy the place. But you can manage the loop in an hour and a half if you were in a hurry."

Joseph

"Beautiful hike with lots of Rhododendron and foliage. It leads to a waterfall, more strenuous hike once you get up to the waterfall. Would not recommend for small children. Lots of mud and crossing creeks but worth it"

Rebecca Brown

"This is a great trail! Just over 3 miles long, and not easy. So keep that in mind. Two nice waterfalls make it worthwhile, though. It is mostly shady which is good. The trail is mostly a gradual elevation change until you get closer to the upper falls, then it gets steeper and many more rocks on the trail. Overall it's a great trail. The parking lot is often full, but there are pit toilets available here."

The Allure of Graveyard Fields Waterfalls

Graveyard Fields is renowned for its two distinct waterfalls: the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls. The Upper Falls is a more dramatic cascade, requiring a moderate to strenuous hike to reach. This trail can be rocky and steep, especially as you get closer to the falls, and often involves navigating muddy patches and creek crossings. Reddit Despite the challenging terrain, the reward is a beautiful waterfall with a popular swimming hole at its base, offering a refreshing dip on a warm day. InstagramReddit

The Lower Falls are more easily accessible, primarily reached via a scenic boardwalk. This section is ideal for those seeking a less strenuous experience or for families with younger children. The boardwalk provides lovely views and a gentler introduction to the area's natural beauty. Instagram+1

Chasing Fall Colors at Graveyard Fields

Graveyard Fields is celebrated as one of the earliest locations in the Blue Ridge Mountains to display peak fall foliage. The elevation of approximately 5,000 feet contributes to its early color transformation, often beginning in late September and reaching its zenith in the first two weeks of October. Instagram+2 This makes it a prime destination for those eager to witness the vibrant spectacle of autumn leaves. Instagram

Social media content frequently highlights the stunning pops of gold, orange, and red that paint the landscape during this season. Instagram+2 Visitors are advised to plan their trips accordingly, as the colors can change rapidly. Checking local fall color reports is recommended to catch the peak. Instagram

Navigating the Trails and Ensuring Safety

While parts of the trail are rated as easy and family-friendly, particularly the boardwalk to the lower falls, the path to the upper falls presents more challenges. InstagramReddit Hikers should be prepared for muddy conditions, rocky ascents, and creek crossings, especially after rainfall. Reddit Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are highly recommended to navigate these sections safely. Reddit

It's crucial for visitors to stay on marked trails to protect the environment and ensure personal safety.
