"Absolutely incredible little oasis in the middle of the desert. It took us about 40 minutes to drive here from Carlsbad, and it was so worth it. The falls overlook is very easy to get to. It's only a short distance up a small paved hill. from there, you can walk down to the base of the waterfall, along the riverbed, and there is also a trail that goes up and over the waterfall. They have good toilet facilities and plenty of covered picnic shelters. The whole place was very clean and inviting. it's definitely worth the trip out there.
A couple of notes of caution, though
When we were entering the park, all the payment envelopes were wet. I knew better but I reached down into the box to see if there were any dry ones near the bottom. I got stung by a scorpion who appeared to have made his home in the box.
Also, watch closely the weather in the rainy season. Some areas of the road cannot be passed as they flood. We did look at the forecast, thought we had enough time to do the trail on top of the waterfall. We were deciding whether to go further, or go back down when we saw some rain off in the distance. let me tell you that rain came in so fast, it was unbelievable. by the time we started walking down the side, the water was running like a river under our feet. We made it safely down and into a shelter.
Drive this speed, limit and watch out for animals on the road. It is an open range area."

"Take the beautiful long drive and go! Park Host Mr Cliff was so informative and welcoming. The area and trails are easy and oh so stunning. The water is magical. Will be back. Remember: Pack out what you pack in. There is no reason to not take care of places you love to visit. Pick up your trash and do better. Such a treasure of a spot. PSA WE DID SEE A LEECH."

"A gem of a little park. Needed something to fill in my afternoon rving around the area. It’s a bit out of the way so I was hesitant to go. I’m really glad I went. The waterfalls, pools, and rock formations are really nice. The water was too cold for me to get in, but was nice to soak my feet in. Sat in the shade provided by the water worn cliffs and just enjoyed the cool breeze. The picnic area was expansive and grassy as they have a water source to allow it to grow. I didn’t get a chance to explore the hiking trails. Don’t let the desolate drive put you off. It’s worth the time!"
