What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bates Beach is a beloved, peaceful hideaway known for its soft sand, abundant driftwood art, and free amenities like parking and picnic areas. While some visitors note the restrooms could be better maintained and are aware of occasional tar on the sand, the overall experience is highly positive, with many praising its quiet atmosphere and the unique charm of its natural features.
"Free parking, clean restrooms and showers, and covered picnic tables. Nice walk down a long ramp to a soft sand beach with lots of driftwood; some of it used to make very creative structures. Watch out for small blobs of tar that may stick to your feet. Top tip: bring an old rag or washcloth and baby oil. That will clean off the oil. Be mindful of nude sunbathing beyond the long beach wall. It has historically been posted with signage."

"This is a quiet beach for swimming, surfing and picnics, with an ample parking lot. Which is free...!
Restrooms are few, and although serviced regularly, they are not in good shape most of the time.
The parking lot is much higher than the beach, which does not stop the people from walking there with their carry-ons.
The seating area is quite large and accommodating. A unique place for family gatherings and parties.
Reservations may be required.
Overall an amazing hideaway, where you can have a peaceful beach experience."

"Been coming to this beach since 1986 when I came with some friends and we went to the nude section. The nude portion has returned and it is still great. Long stretch of beach to enjoy the water, walks, and to play while nude. Wife and I spent two days here on the beach. Weather was great."
