"Amazing views, pristine trails that are fast and flowey. Lower section is great XC style riding with very open terrain the upper section is wooded and hilly. In my top 5 favorite rides."
Ian Collins
"The Clear Creek Trail is a nice trail to hike or mountain bike to the view point which overlooks Clear Creek and the Carson Valley. From the upper start of the trail at Spooner Summit it is roughly ~2.5 miles to the viewpoint from the parking lot. The trail is relatively flat for the upper portion and then begins to descend more at the viewpoint with great elevation change. Peaceful and easy upper trail with great views, and more exposed trail at lower elevations. I have also mountain biked up the lower 4 miles of the trail which is also fairly mellow and not to steep of a climb and offers great views of Jacks Valley. Overall a fun Mountain Bike trail."
Brendan Kiely
"A really nice trail that you can go a long way on if you want, 14 plus miles. The first part is a steady but gradual grade that offers wonderful views of the Carson Valley. The trail diverges quite a bit and is used by a lot of mountain bikers. Lots of nice wild flowers in bloom now!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For families who are mountain biking, it's crucial to choose the right equipment. Wider tires with good grip are recommended, and parents should assess their children's biking skills against the trail's single-track nature and potential sandy patches. Weekday visits are advisable to avoid larger crowds and ensure a more relaxed experience for everyone.
⛰️ Avid Hikers & Backpackers
Consider planning your route to take advantage of the different sections. The upper parts offer more serene hiking, while the lower sections can be more exposed and challenging. Be prepared for potential encounters with mountain bikers on the single-track portions and always carry ample water and necessary supplies for longer excursions.
🚴♀️ Mountain Bikers
Crucially, tire selection is key. Mountain bikes or gravel bikes with wider, grippier tires are highly recommended over hybrids with narrower tires for optimal performance and safety on this trail. The numerous switchbacks help moderate the climb, making it a fun ride for intermediate to advanced bikers. Access from Jacks Valley Road or Spooner Summit provides different starting points for your adventure.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Mountain Biking the Clear Creek Trail
When planning a biking trip, tire choice is crucial. Many users recommend wider tires with good grip, such as those found on mountain bikes, gravel bikes, or robust hybrids. Riding a hybrid with narrower tires has been described as inappropriate for the trail's conditions. The trail's design incorporates plenty of switchbacks, which help manage the grade, preventing overly steep climbs. This makes it accessible for a range of skill levels, though caution is advised due to some sections with steep drop-offs.
Popular access points for bikers include the trailhead at Jacks Valley Road and Spooner Summit. The trail can be used to connect with the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT), offering longer ride possibilities. While enjoyable, it's important to be prepared for varying conditions, especially if riding in late March when snow and fallen trees can still be present on north-facing sections.
Hiking and Trail Running
For those looking for a more challenging hike, the trail provides more exposed terrain at lower elevations and significant elevation changes as you approach the viewpoint. The presence of wildflowers in bloom during certain seasons adds an extra layer of visual appeal. Hikers should be aware of the single-track nature of much of the trail and be prepared to share the path with mountain bikers and other users.
Trail runners will appreciate the mix of surfaces and the well-designed switchbacks that keep the climbs manageable. The variety of landscapes, from open terrain to wooded areas, provides an engaging running experience. As with any outdoor activity, carrying sufficient water and being aware of weather conditions is essential for a safe and enjoyable outing.
