What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
McAfee Knob is celebrated for its absolutely breathtaking, panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it a must-visit for hikers. The sunrise experience is particularly lauded as spectacular and worth the early start. While the trail is long and can be challenging, many find the effort immensely rewarding. Some visitors note that parking can be a significant issue, and the trail can get crowded.
"Excellent trail with breathtaking views of the blue ridge mountains. I'm sure this is also beautiful in the fall. In summer you're mainly in a tree tunnel aside from 2 overlooks along the way. Then at the top you'll find the great clifftop views. We met a helpful ranger at the start who said the fire road will bypass the really rocky first 2.5 miles of trail and meets up with the trail about halfway up. This is a good way to go if you're concerned about your knees and/or balance."

"We're from the UK, and are fairly experienced walkers. We've long coveted the Appalachian trail, and while we were in the area driving the blue ridge parkway, we couldn't resist the opportunity to visit this iconic spot. We started out just after 5am, and as the route was pitch black, we decided to ascend via the fire road, and come back down the AT. It's a steady climb, but nothing overly strenuous. The view at sunrise was absolutely stunning."

"Local and statewide favorite. Kinda long at about 9.4 miles total (4.7 one way), but trail quality is excellent and elevation gain isn't too bad. Can be crowded at times. Highly recommend sunrise hike with headlamps. Sunrise does not disappoint."
