Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Channel Islands National Park as a 'hidden gem' offering a unique 'off-grid' adventure with stunning scenery and abundant wildlife. The ferry ride is a highlight, often filled with whale and dolphin sightings. However, the challenging disembarkation process and lack of amenities require careful planning.

"This is a hidden gem. It was a good adventure! Starting with the ferry ride across and then the remote feel to the camping. There was limited cell service so it was all interpersonal connections like nature should be. Keep your stuff packed up well the critters on this island are smart. A small lock for the tent better yet put anything scented in the boxes provided at the campsite. The hikes have epic views and sunsets. Go grab some adventure!"

"one of the more unique parks. only way out is a long boat trip, to get off or on the island you have to brave the stairs while the boat is actively being forced back into them. a bit imtense."

"While our experience getting to this remote but unforgettable national Park was rough (and I'm not talking about the boat ride which was surprisingly smooth) it was so so worth it. To start with plan ahead with wherever you are staying or coming from. We were in Covina, a short 85 miles away, a trip that should have taken an hour and 20 minutes took us just over 3 hours...LA Traffic is unpredictable. Called when it became aware that we would not make it to our boat, Island Packers were able to move us to a new tour and saved the day! Boat ride out was smooth and the captain was fun and informative, stopping to see animals at all chances! Once on the island (Anacapa for us) we were able to walk around the whole main islands trails. Saw so many pelicans, sea lions and gulls, plus a falcon of some kind! Beautiful views from every corner! Highly recommend checking this park off your list, though maybe try and aim for a different island as Anacapa is not shaded and conditions can be harsh. Also be aware that you will see lots of bones, dead birds, and mice, as is nature. We were unaware beforehand but you can swim and snorkel in the landing Cove. Garabaldi ( CA state fish) spotted in the water near the dock!!"

Choosing Your Island Adventure

Channel Islands National Park is comprised of five islands, each offering a distinct experience. Santa Cruz Island is the largest and most developed, boasting diverse hiking trails, the historic Scorpion Ranch, and opportunities to spot the endemic island fox. It's often recommended for first-time visitors due to its variety of activities, including kayaking into sea caves. Reddit

Anacapa Island is known for its dramatic sea cliffs, abundant bird colonies (especially pelicans), and the iconic Anacapa Lighthouse. While beautiful, it's also very exposed with limited shade, making it a challenging destination on hot days. The ferry landing involves a steep climb up stairs. Reddit

Santa Rosa Island offers more remote camping and hiking opportunities, including the stunning Torrey Pines and the chance to see the island fox. San Miguel Island is the most remote and rugged, known for its wild beaches and large elephant seal rookeries, but access can be more challenging. Santa Barbara Island is the smallest, popular for snorkeling and diving with its clear waters and abundant marine life. Reddit

Wildlife Encounters

The journey to Channel Islands National Park is often as exciting as the destination itself, thanks to the abundant marine life. Keep your eyes peeled during the ferry ride with Island Packers for humpback whales, gray whales, dolphins, and porpoises. The waters are also home to sea lions and harbor seals, which are frequently spotted basking on rocks or swimming near the shore. Reddit

On the islands, the most famous resident is the island fox, a small, endemic species found on all five islands. These curious creatures are often seen foraging near trails and campsites. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diverse avian population, including brown pelicans, seagulls, and various shorebirds. Anacapa Island, in particular, is a critical nesting ground for pelicans. Remember to observe wildlife from a safe distance and never feed the animals. Reddit

The Island Packers Experience

Island Packers is the sole provider of transportation to Channel Islands National Park, operating ferries from Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor. Booking your tickets well in advance is paramount, as trips, especially to popular islands like Santa Cruz and Anacapa, fill up quickly. The ferry ride itself is an integral part of the park experience, offering excellent opportunities for whale and dolphin watching. Reddit

Be prepared for the disembarkation process, which can be intense. At islands like Anacapa, you'll need to navigate stairs while the boat is actively being pushed back into the landing. This can be a bit daunting for some. The crew is generally knowledgeable and provides interesting commentary during the journey.
