Reviews Summary

Mount Philo State Park is lauded for its breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks, making it a must-visit for its scenic beauty, especially at sunset. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained trails, the option to drive to the summit, and the family-friendly atmosphere. Some find the entrance fee a bit high, and parking can be an issue during peak times.

"Mt. Philo State Park stands as a testament to the Green Mountain State's natural splendor—and it's no wonder it's the oldest state park in Vermont, established back in 1924. At just 237 acres atop the 968-foot summit of Mount Philo, you'll have panoramic vistas that stretch across Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains in New York, and eastward to the rolling Green Mountains. Sunsets are spectacular. The entrance fee is $5 but it can be free if you're currently staying at any other state park.
The park's trails are a hiker's dream for those seeking accessibility without an overwhelming challenge. The star attraction is the Summit Trail, a 1.7-mile out-and-back loop rated moderate with about 629 feet of elevation gain. It starts at the lower parking area and is well-marked, weaving through lush forests of maple, birch, and hemlock, with some steep stone steps that add a bit of grit but keep things family-friendly (think 45-60 minutes up for most folks). For an easier ascent, you can drive the historic carriage road—originally built in 1903 for horse-drawn surreys—to the top, where picnic tables and benches await. The Western Loop (2 miles, 593 feet gain) offers a scenic alternative with cliffside views and wildflower meadows in summer. The Devil's Chair hike is a bit more challenging and I don’t recommend it for younger children. Adults however, shouldn't miss it as it has you traversing under 50+ foot shear cliffs. Beware, you will have to walk on the narrow roads for a bit on either end of the trail."

"A beautiful state park to hike and picnic with family. The trails are challenging but some parts have steps that are not steep. It takes approximately 20 minutes to get to the top or faster if you do not stop to look out for millipedes. They are everywhere on the trail in the summer!
Keep in mind that they do charge an entrance fee. There were four of us and we paid $20 to get through the entrance. We did see some cars parked on the side but not sure if they parked on the other end to avoid the entrance fees?
The summit is beautiful and quiet. There are plenty of adirondack chairs and picnic tables. If you do not feel like hiking all the way up top, you can drive up but there are restrictions on when the driving path is opened to cars."

Sun Family

"Loved this park! Great hike, not too hard, but not too easy! Rewarding views. This park is accommodating for those who cannot hike long distances- as there is a parking area at the top. Ample picnic areas. Water and latrines at the top. Great stop on our Vermont vacation!"
