What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Historic Plains Hotel offers a deeply historic experience with a charming lobby and friendly staff, but some guests find the rooms lack modern updates and cleanliness. Its prime downtown location is a major plus for exploring Cheyenne.
"The front desk ladies are welcoming & friendly. The lobby is cool. The restaurant was not open. The room was awful. Clearly not cleaned very well. I asked & received freshly clean pillow cases because the pillow cases had been used. The snell in the room was just terrible. Hairs in the shower & sink. In the morning I unplugged a light to plug in the coffee maker & looked behind the fridge and there was a pile of garbage behind the fridge. I was just so disappointed by my stay. The lobby & front desk folks are the only nice thing about this hotel."

"room was clean and nice. It's 100 years old and saw it's last major renovation in the early 2000s. TVs were new but there aren't a lot of plugs. It was plumbed at some point after it was built so there's exposed pipes. They built this hotel 3 years before world war 1. The first named transcontinental road wasn't proposed until a year or so after this opened so set your expectations accordingly and you'll have a great time.
Bar staff was super friendly and you emerge from The Plains into a really historic and pretty part of Wyoming's capital. Well worth a stay if you're passing through especially off season. Book this place early on Frontier days though since it'll get busy.
Eisenhower stayed here during the 1919 army motor convoy, the original route of the Lincoln highway runs right along it."

"I wanted to love the historic charm of The Plains Hotel in Cheyenne, but unfortunately, our experience was far from what the website promised. The photos are very misleading. While the building itself has history, the actual conditions were unacceptable.
Our room was extremely dirty. The bathroom clearly had not been cleaned, with visible grime in the sink, mold in the shower, and urine on the toilet. There was also toilet paper on the floor. It didn’t feel sanitary at all. There was a full size refrigerator that was not cleaned as well. There was dirt in the bed frame, stains on the walls, and brown spots on the sheets. The overall condition of the room was rundown and neglected.
When we arrived, my cousin’s reservation was incorrect on the hotel side, and there was no one at the front desk. We had to call someone to get help, and then waited another 20 minutes for the manager, Michael, to come from on-site housing. He was unprofessional and dismissive during the interaction. The other younger front desk helper was extremely professional and apologetic.
Between the poor service, unclean conditions, and the general disrepair, I would absolutely not recommend staying here. It’s a shame, because the hotel has potential but it desperately needs new management and serious attention to cleanliness and hospitality."
