What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum for its unique focus on Chicago's movable bridges and its stunning river views. The free admission and the chance to witness a bridge lift are major draws. However, the lack of elevator access and the small size of the museum are noted drawbacks for some.
"Visited May 2025. Entrance is free of charge but you can (as I did) give a donasjon.
Was greeted by three very friendly people, had a nice little chat with them, they showed me some cool old pictures of the bridge/river on the PC and i also got recommendation about another attraction outside of Chicago.
It’s a self-guided tour spread across four levels (if I remember correctly). Access is only by stairs, which might be challenging for some visitors. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of interesting information displayed on boards throughout the site.
Very nice with all the openings at each level where you have view towards the river, bridge etc.
Entrance and exit is the same, so you will have to walk back down again to exit."

"Nice boutique museum educating the historical events that shaped the Chicago river. Free but donations are recommended"

"I visited the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum around 10:00 AM, unsure if there would be a bridge lift event that day. Fortunately, Josh was incredibly helpful and explained that the bridge lift was likely to happen between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Thanks to his clear and thoughtful communication, I was able to return around noon and witness the fascinating bridge lift in person!
Inside the museum, there’s a great exhibit that explains the mechanics behind the bridge and offers rich insight into its history and cultural significance. I especially appreciated the short “intel” session before the event, which included a sound signal (a ring) that helped me anticipate the exact moment to start taking photos.
Overall, I highly recommend the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum. Josh’s outstanding communication made my visit truly memorable. Thanks again, Josh!"
