What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the natural beauty and the unique experience of seeing wild ponies and diverse wildlife. The undeveloped beaches are a major draw for those seeking a peaceful escape. However, be prepared for biting insects, especially on trails, and note that dogs are not allowed in the refuge.
"Beautiful island!! As soon as you get onto the island you already feel the vibes. It’s a cute little town full of shops and food. Plenty of places to rent a scooter/moped/ golf cart , definitely the best way to get around. The park and beaches are scenic and gorgeous, although as much as I tried I couldn’t find any wild ponies which is the main attraction of the island…. But even without them was definitely worth my time to visit there."

"Truly an absolute amazing place to come visit anytime! From sunrise to sunset, it's hard to beat what you have right there! They do try and take care of the entire beach especially now that they are moving the parking lots. Hopefully you can see the beauty that is chincoteague!"

"Came here with my wife during our 1-year anniversary trip 😊 This whole area is so beautiful and its teeming with wildlife! We didn't see any of the horses when we came, but we saw and heard lots of birds! The first day we came it was super windy as Hurricane Erin was bashing the southeast. It had done some considerably damage to the main beach area here, so when we came back today we took the Swan Cove Trail. Somehow, that stretch of beach looked untouched, which was interesting. And again, lots of birds! We had a great time checking this place out and walking on the beach, even during the first visit 😂"
