Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Babcock Building's stunning Italian Renaissance architecture and the resilience shown in its restoration, particularly the iconic cupola. While its past as an abandoned site is noted, its current repurposing as apartments is seen as a positive step for preservation, though some confusion exists regarding access to the residential complex.

"Abandoned beauty. We didn't dare go in, even tho a gate was open as security was parked all around. We did walk around the building, the church across the street and the cottages. The hospital campus was huge. Security did greet us when walking around the cottages and we were asked to stay in our car."

"Beautiful old Italian Renaissance building originally constructed from 1858-1885. While inspired largely by the Kirkbride Asylum Plan, Babcock did not have staggered wings as in a true Kirkbride, and was more closely related to a Cottage Plan.
This stunning structure, with it's iconic cupola, was unfortunately victim to 2 fires in 3 years; the most recent one in late 2020, which did severe structural damage and caused the dome to fall in.
It's truly a shame Babcock met such a horrific fate; but it's good they have decided to repurpose rather than demolish this building. From those explorers who loved this epic site, Rest in Peace, Babcock!
Enjoy these pictures...fond memories."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Babcock Building's Architectural Significance

The Babcock Building is a prime example of Italian Renaissance architecture, a style that was popular for institutional buildings in the mid-to-late 19th century. Its design was largely inspired by the Kirkbride Asylum Plan, a philosophy that emphasized natural light, ventilation, and a structured environment for mental health treatment. However, unlike a true Kirkbride design, Babcock did not feature staggered wings, leaning more towards a Cottage Plan in its layout. This blend of influences resulted in a grand and imposing structure that has long been a prominent feature of Columbia's skyline.

The building's original construction spanned several decades, from 1858 to 1885, reflecting the evolving architectural trends and needs of the time. Its historical role as part of the South Carolina State Hospital campus adds another layer to its significance, representing a period in the history of mental healthcare. The iconic cupola that once crowned the building was a distinctive feature, symbolizing its prominence and grandeur.

Despite facing significant challenges, including devastating fires that caused severe structural damage and the loss of its dome, the Babcock Building has been the subject of extensive restoration efforts. This commitment to preservation ensures that its architectural heritage and historical narrative continue to be appreciated for future generations. Instagram+1

Restoration and Repurposing: A New Chapter

The Babcock Building has undergone a remarkable transformation, moving from a state of disrepair to a revitalized landmark. Following devastating fires, particularly the one in late 2020 that destroyed the dome, extensive restoration and renovation projects were undertaken. The successful reconstruction and reinstallation of the iconic red cupola in August 2023 marked a significant milestone in this revival, symbolizing hope and the building's enduring spirit. Instagram+1

Today, the Babcock Building has been repurposed and is no longer abandoned. A substantial portion of the building now serves as a residential apartment complex, @thebabcockbuilding. This adaptive reuse project has breathed new life into the historic structure, allowing it to serve a modern purpose while preserving its architectural integrity. This approach is often celebrated as a positive example of historic preservation, turning a potentially lost landmark into a vibrant part of the community. InstagramReddit

While the interior is now primarily private, the exterior and the surrounding Bull Street District remain areas of interest for those appreciating history and architecture. Visitors can still admire the building's grand facade and explore the historic campus, which includes other notable structures like cottages and a church, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
