Estimated at 350–400 years old, this giant has watched the Missouri River country change since the 1600s—and it still spreads a magnificent crown over the floodplain today. Part of what makes this tree so moving is its resilience. It has weathered droughts, storms, and even the Great Flood of 1993, when water rose roughly six feet around its trunk—and kept on standing like a quiet guardian. 
What I love most is how the community cares for it. The Missouri Department of Conservation and local stewards have nourished the soil, pruned carefully, and even taken cuttings so its lineage continues—proof that people here don’t just admire the tree, they protect it. 
I stand under those branches and imagine the centuries: bison trails, riverboats, cyclists on the Katy Trail today. The world has evolved around it; the Big Tree remains—rooted, patient, and profoundly beautiful. "

"I've been out here to see and photograph this tree in good weather and bad, for breathtaking sunsets, amid morning flurries, during thunderstorms (not too close to the tree!), on hot summer days, and snowy winter ones. One of the fascinations with this tree is that it has withstood the test of time--literally hundreds of years. It is also striking because of its location, isolated from other trees in a floodplain farm field, standing sentinel.
The tree may be the most photographed feature in the Columbia area, along with the Columns. Generations have marveled at it, and may many more do the same."
