Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the knowledgeable guides and the special feeling of being in Thoreau's home, recommending it for its historical significance and the opportunity to attend engaging events. Some note that it's not the exact birthplace and suggest exploring the surrounding historical areas for a fuller experience.

"Had a wonderful tour here recently 💛 the tour guide knew a lot about the house, the history, and the area 💛 recommend stopping in if you ever pass by"

"I attended an authors conversation here and had never been. Thoreau is an earthquake in my life as he is to many. Being in his home was very special. I will at some point return during daytime hours and explore more "thoreu-ly". We are very lucky to have this historical site not only restored and operating but also welcoming people for important events through the Thoreau society and others."

Geoffrey Gould

"I grew up in Lexington and have driven by this place countless times. Unfortunately, this is not where Thoreau was born. He was actually born a little ways down the road from here. Head west down the road a little ways, and you will see a sign marking the actual place he was born. It's pretty close to the farm. The sign has been there long before the restoration of the farm and Gaining Ground. If you're visiting and you want to see something very few ever see, check out the Estabrook Woods near the Old North Bridge. This place is virtually untouched for over 200+ years. About 1500 unspoiled acres. In it is the route some patriots took on the way to confront the British at the North Bridge,as well as foundations of houses built in the early 1600s when it was pretty much the frontier of what became this country. I'm pretty sure that Harvard University owns most of this conservation land. It's a beautiful place loaded with early history of this country. A wonderful little known treasure. It's very difficult to find peace and quiet around Boston. This is one of the best places to find it. About the only thing disturbing that might be aircraft approaching Hanscom Field. I'm retired and living in Colorado now. This is the one place I miss the most about the Boston area. Other than the sports teams."
