Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Marys River Natural Area for its serene beauty, especially in foggy or rainy weather, and its well-maintained boardwalk trails through open fields. It's a favored spot for jogging and wildlife observation. However, access can be challenging due to potential flooding and rough roads, and direct river access is limited.

"This has been my favorite place to jog for years! Especially in the rain and fog!! 🥰 Something really majestic about the smokey grey mountains and trees in the distance across the large open fields!"

Ryan Nisbet

"This is a lovely place for a walk. If you park near the east entrance there is a gravel parking lot and short road to bring you closer to the trail head. Because of the flooding, that parking lot and road are very washed out and inaccessible. If you can get around the pool sized pot holes, however, the trail is paved and absolutely pristine. It is a cement sidewalk, and then boardwalk through lovely fields and the Mary's River flood plane. The trail is fairly short. Keep your dogs on a leash. At the end ofthe boardwalk you can wander through the field on a man made trail down to the river, but there is no easy access to the water. It is a steep, clay bank. But the water is beautiful to watch. Allergy alert! Lots of pollen sharing plants :)"

"Vast open swamp ground with a lot of wild flowers. A good spot for picnic or playing with your dog. In spring this place is accessible but I have heard it becomes a swamp in winter(?)."

Understanding the Terrain and Access

Marys River Natural Area is characterized by its verdant terrain, featuring large open fields and the winding Marys River. The primary trail system includes a paved cement sidewalk that transitions into a boardwalk, offering an accessible way to traverse the floodplains. However, visitors should be aware that the area is prone to flooding, particularly in winter months. The east entrance road and parking lot are frequently washed out, presenting challenges with large potholes. This means that accessibility can vary significantly depending on recent weather conditions. It's advisable to check local conditions or be prepared for a more rugged approach if the main access points are compromised. Reddit

Despite potential access issues, the trails themselves are described as pristine once you reach them. The boardwalk provides a pleasant walking experience through lovely fields and along the river. While there's a man-made trail down to the river from the end of the boardwalk, direct water access is difficult due to steep, clay banks. The beauty of the water is still a draw, even without easy access. Allergy sufferers should note the presence of many pollen-sharing plants, especially in spring. Reddit

Experiencing the Atmosphere

One of the most unique aspects of Marys River Natural Area is its majestic atmosphere, particularly during rain and fog. Visitors rave about the 'smokey grey mountains and trees in the distance across the large open fields' during these conditions. This creates a serene and almost mystical environment, making it a favorite spot for joggers and those seeking a peaceful retreat. The vast open grounds, dotted with wildflowers in spring, add to the natural beauty and provide a sense of tranquility. Reddit

The area is also a haven for wildlife observation. Abundant raptors and birds are frequently spotted, making it an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers. The open fields and riverbanks offer prime viewing opportunities. While the trails are generally short, the immersive natural setting and the chance to witness local fauna make it a rewarding visit.
