What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Wheeler Geologic Area for its incredibly unique and otherworldly rock formations, calling it a hidden gem and a must-see. However, the challenging access via a treacherous jeep road or a long hike is a significant hurdle for many, requiring substantial preparation and a capable vehicle or strong hiking legs.
"What an amazing and incredible place. Definitely a hidden gem and lost monument of Colorado. If you can hike the 16-17 miles roundtrip it is definitely worth it. The jeep road can be treacherous if you are not well prepared for any off road. The some ruts on the jeep road are deep and muddy in wet conditions. I highly recommend hiking if you do not have a jeep or 4 wheelers. There are no cell services if you are stuck.
Once you get to this area it's like in another planet. Very alienated and cool rock formations from what is shape by a massive volcano eruption in history. You gotta see it to believe it. Very cool place."

"Wheeler is not for the weak of adventure. It is a solid 2 plus hour high clearance 4x4 or 1:45 minute ATV trip one way to Wheeler. I highly recommend either going very early or planning to campout over night so you can spend most of the day exploring the area. There is so much to see you need to spend the day there. It is a 1/2 mile hike from the parking area. I have bee there on ATV and in a jeep and I highly recommend the ATV over the Jeep. Wheeler is truly one of God's most beautiful creations."

"Very striking geological feature. Little but if a home uphill but not hard!"
