"Incredible dispersed camping experience in crested butte. Always love going during peak wildflower season in July / August"

"A place that makes you thankful to be alive. Surrounded by colorful mountains and lush wetlands, campsite 12 is a literal dream. It has a nice shaded tree area where you can hang a hammock close to your fire ring. At the end, a large, flat, gravel tent pad. And all around you, nature is happening. I watched a small herd of deer wander across the mountainside in the morning while drinking my coffee. The drive in is great, and the road isn’t too bad, even after it warns you it needs 4x4/high clearance. For reference, I was in a Forester and didn’t go up to Emerald lake/ the pass. The road into the campsite had a little more washout and a significant hill leading to my site. I don’t do much non-paved road driving and usually occupy a passenger princess role, and it wasn’t scary at all; however, the weather was warm and dry. Make sure to grab a camping permit from the lower sites (also where the vault toilets are located), pay your camping fee down there (18$/night, cash/check only), and display your filled-out permit at your campsite. It’s early September, but leaves are already starting to change and once the sun goes down it’s COLD. I imagine in a week or two, the colors will be at peak. If you’re coming in on a weekend, get there early on a Friday otherwise everything will probably be taken already. I got in around 4-5p on a Friday and only a few sites weren’t claimed. If you’re lucky enough to get a spot, enjoy every moment. Just please follow leave no trace philosophy so this land can be enjoyed by you and others for years to come."
