What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Dana Point's abundant marine life, with many tours offering thrilling sightings of dolphins and various whale species. The knowledgeable and enthusiastic crews are frequently highlighted for enhancing the experience. While the ocean can be unpredictable, the possibility of seeing thousands of dolphins or a majestic blue whale makes it a highly recommended adventure.
"I was in town for work and had a day off to explore, so I found Captain Dave’s and decided to go for a boat tour. Captain Maria did a fabulous job taking us on a water adventure to find whales and dolphin pods. First mate Sopha was very knowledgeable on all the marine life. It was an enjoyable and much needed relaxing day on the water. Thank you to all the staff that made it happen. You also have to take the climb up to the top of the bluff, for the spectacular views of the marina. Highly recommended! ~ Carrie Ann Robinson"

"We booked the Zodiac speedy boat tour, and the entire safari was such an incredible experience! The smaller group size (around 10 people) made it feel personal and enjoyable. The ride itself was thrilling: fast enough to keep motion sickness at bay, and we were even able to stand at the front of the boat for the best views. We spotted many bottlenose dolphins and a few sea lions along the way at the 9:30am tour.
Despite the gloomy weather at the start, our guide Safa and Captain Matt made the trip so welcoming, fun, and full of fascinating facts about marine life. Plus, we were treated to delicious homemade brownies from the captain himself! Thank you for such a memorable and well-run adventure. Highly recommended."

"We had a great experience on the Allswell with Captain Kathy and First Mate Safa! They were very knowledgeable of the area, what was going on with the wildlife and all the trivia about marine life that we experienced on this trip. They were so kindhearted to stop and pull the Mylar balloons out of the water so no sea creatures have to fall victim to them! We got to see sea lions, common dolphins, and birds of all kinds. I would certainly recommend this duo for your whale watching adventure!"

📸 📸 Photography Tips
Late afternoon often provides beautiful golden hour light for photography. However, morning tours can also offer good visibility and active marine life.
A telephoto lens (e.g., 70-200mm or longer) is ideal for capturing distant marine life. A wide-angle lens can be useful for capturing the vast ocean scenery and any close-up dolphin encounters. :camerawithflash:
Be patient and ready to shoot. Focus on the eyes of the animals when possible. For dolphins, try to capture them leaping or interacting. For whales, aim for shots that show their scale or breaching behavior.
While dedicated photography tours are less common, many operators are accommodating to photographers. Inform your captain if you have specific photographic interests.
Use a faster shutter speed to freeze motion, especially with moving boats and wildlife. Increase your ISO if necessary, but be mindful of noise. Image stabilization is also very helpful. :camerawithflash:
