Reviews Summary

Butler Island Plantation is a poignant roadside attraction offering a glimpse into Georgia's rice empire and the difficult history of slavery. While the plantation house is inaccessible due to fire damage, visitors can explore the grounds, read historical markers, and appreciate the remnants of 19th-century agricultural engineering. Some visitors note caution is needed due to potential hornet nests and rough road conditions.

"Road side attraction in Darien Ga, boat and kayak launch, not much wildlife in the winter months. The building is run down and there is no access inside, the outside of the launch and house are filled with old hornets nests so be careful in hot months coming here. Otherwise the island is beautiful and worth walking around for a quick visit."

Jennifer M (Jen)

"The plantation house was fenced off from looks like a fire. Say it is no longer able to be viewed in its beauty."

Emptynesters Travels

"Famous rice Plantation of the 19th century, owned by Pierce Butler of Philadelphia. A system of dikes and canals for the cultivation of rice, installed by engineers from Holland, is still in evidence in the old fields, and has been used as a pattern for similar operations in recent years.

During a visit here with her husband in 1839-40, Pierce Butler`s wife, the brilliant English actress, Fannie Kemble, wrote her "Journal of a Residence On A Georgia Plantation," which is said to have influenced England against the Confederacy."
