Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Haskell Free Library and Opera House for its unique binational nature and fascinating history. The experience of standing on the US-Canada border inside the building is a major highlight, complemented by the charm of the historic opera house. The guided tours are highly recommended for their informative and engaging content.

"This was a cool place to visit. It is a working public library as well as an active opera house. This building was built on the Vermont and Canadian border. Inside 1/2 is in the USA and the other 1/2 is in Canada. You can stand in both countries at the same time, the black line on the floor is the actual border. Books are available for check out and purchase. They have a tour for $10 that includes the opera house. Our guide, Natasha was awesome and very knowledgeable about the history. You could tell she really loved her job. It made the experience even better. If you just want to see the opera house part they have a $5 quick peek. This allows you to see the inside of the auditorium without taking the history tour. Outside you have to be careful not to cross the border on the street. There are concrete barriers and there is a small pillar that has the United States on 1 side and Canada on the other side. I was actually able to lean over the barrier and get a picture of the Canada side of the pillar. They do have a Canadian border guard near the barriers, the experience was worth it. If you get a chance visit I recommend it. I'll post interior and exterior pics"

"Full service library, music venue and cultural center built on the international border between Canada and the USA. The border runs through the building and, inside, is demarcated by tape on the floor and a set of small Canadian and US flags. There are no walls, custom agents or alarming technology within. Visitors are requested to enter and exit through the same door (USA in front and Canada in the back). Outside, the property is divided by granite block topped with white petunias in flower boxes. I recommend highly a visit to this institution."

David Smith

"An interesting place, you are technically at two countries at one. FREE entrance. Limited parking space but you can find more at some adjacent apts or at the gas station and just walkby. Well organized and clean place. Their restroom smells good too. See images for reference."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Building Divided: The International Border

The most captivating aspect of the Haskell Free Library and Opera House is its literal straddling of the US-Canada border. Constructed in 1904, the building was deliberately placed on the international line that separates Derby Line, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec. This unique placement means the building has two entrances, one in each country, and the border is clearly marked inside by a black line taped to the floor. Visitors can stand with one foot in the United States and the other in Canada, a truly unique experience. InstagramReddit

This binational nature extends beyond just the physical location. The library serves both communities, fostering a sense of shared culture and literacy. While the border is a prominent feature, the institution emphasizes unity and accessibility, with visitors generally requested to enter and exit through the same door to avoid customs complications. InstagramReddit

Outside the building, the border is also clearly delineated with pillars and barriers, offering further photo opportunities and a tangible sense of the international divide. This architectural marvel stands as a symbol of cross-border cooperation and friendship, despite geopolitical shifts. InstagramReddit

More Than Just Books: The Opera House

Beyond its function as a library, the Haskell Free Library and Opera House is also a vibrant performance venue. The opera house section of the building is active and hosts various events, adding another layer to its cultural significance. Visitors can opt for a guided tour that includes access to this historic performance space, offering a glimpse into its past and present. Reddit

Performances can range from local music acts, as seen with 'The One Love Project,' to potentially larger theatrical or musical productions, reflecting its dual purpose. Experiencing an event here provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the building's acoustics and historical ambiance. Instagram

For those who may not have time for the full tour, a 'quick peek' option is available for a nominal fee, allowing a brief view of the auditorium. This ensures that even a short visit can include an appreciation of the opera house's charm. Reddit

Navigating the Border and Access

Visiting the Haskell Free Library and Opera House requires a slight awareness of its unique border location. While the building is designed for easy access from both countries, visitors are strongly advised to use the same entrance and exit to avoid any potential issues with border control. The main entrance is typically on the US side in Derby Line, Vermont. Reddit

Recent years have seen some changes in border regulations, which have impacted access for Canadian visitors entering from the US. Staff at the library have been working to help Canadian visitors navigate these new rules. It's always a good idea to check for any updated advisories or regulations before your visit. Instagram+1

Despite these considerations, the overall experience is described as welcoming and straightforward. The emphasis remains on the shared cultural space and the unique opportunity to experience a binational institution. Reddit
