"Everyone should go here. The history covered is the kind of history Des Moines and Iowa is deservedly proud of, but I've spent 9 years in Iowa and had no idea. They are only open from 10 to 4 on Saturdays. It's a well laid out exhibit and if it's quiet, you might get a free, in depth tour of the entire museum with a docent. Highly recommend - so impressed by this little gem highlighting Black military history, women's military history, and Black women's military history in a thoughtful, digestible, and respectful way."

"Had a wonderful time this museum. A historical gem that has a alot to offer. The African American history displayed is remarkable and the museums does a good job depicting a snap shot back in time. The staff is down to earth and very welcoming."

"It's a neat little attraction but nothing special and could certainly be done better. It's also right next to the Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility so you get the added bonus of losing your search and seizure rights despite not being a criminal, and the area is crawling with prison parolees. That might not be so bad, but they also have a sizeable sex offender unit there and since it's a work release center they're out in public just like everyone else. Anyway, not a stellar experience to say the least."
