What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Michigan Science Center for its engaging, interactive exhibits and family-friendly atmosphere, with Kids Town being a hit for younger children. The IMAX Dome Theatre and live demonstrations are also frequently highlighted as enjoyable experiences. However, some guests have noted issues with closed or non-working exhibits, and occasional rudeness from staff, alongside concerns about unruly children during field trips.
"My wife and I took our daughter here yesterday, and we drive all the way down from Traverse. They had a pretty cool Science show, plenty of activities and a game area my daughter loved. All in all the trip was worth it as she did have a blast. The only reason we listed as 4 stars instead of 5 is that there was unfortunately several things closed off at the time and or just not working. That’s said it wasn’t anything to the point where it would prevent me from returning and this really is a nice place to bring the kids.
The game area was a nice way to finish up the visit and we especially liked the giant chess and connect games."

"It's targeted to children but adults will have fun and learn, or re-learn, important science principles.
Leverage, friction, distance, mass, lasers, etc. And to see how much fun the juveniles can have while not even realizing they are learning stuff.
The IMAX theater, the science demonstrations, the planetarium (closing end of July '25, new one opening in November '25), traveling exhibits.
It's a blast. And remember, science is REAL."

"Families: This place is overtaken with field trip. Kids are not watched, unruly and rude. The dinosaur imax was a not as advertised. It was a documentary, not about trex. The dinosaur exhibit was small and not worth it. The female staff worker in the dinosaur exhibit was rude. The male worker was in his phone. The exhibits are. It what they used to be. Parking and traffic is bad in the area. We were super disappointed. I recommend the Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit over this."

It provides a dedicated space where toddlers and preschoolers can experiment and discover without being overwhelmed by larger exhibits. The design emphasizes tactile exploration and imaginative play, making it a highlight for families with very young children.
The IMAX Dome Experience
For specific events, like screenings of 'Oppenheimer,' attendees have noted the excellent screen quality from the top seating areas. However, it's also been mentioned that the chairs in the IMAX theater can be uncomfortable for longer showings. Arriving about an hour early is recommended to secure good seats for popular screenings.
It's important to note that the Planetarium is undergoing a transition, with a new one set to open in November 2025, replacing the current one closing in July 2025. This means that while the IMAX Dome remains a key attraction, the planetarium experience will be evolving.

While most exhibits are operational, it's worth noting that occasionally some may be closed for maintenance or repair. Checking with staff or the center's website can help you plan your visit to ensure you don't miss out on any key attractions.
