What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Dune Climb a challenging yet rewarding experience, offering stunning views and an exhilarating run down the sand. While some note the strenuous nature and potential for crowds, the natural beauty and unique activity make it a memorable adventure for many. Some reviews mention issues with restroom cleanliness and the cost of park entry.
"This is not the famous spot where you run down the dunes into the water. This is 3.5 miles of hiking up and down dunes only to get to an underwhelming gradual slope to a rocky beach. Instead, go to the Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook. That is a much better place!
Sadly, the bathrooms were the most disgusting public bathrooms I’ve ever been in. They are obviously short-staffed since Trump cut so much funding and employees to our beautiful parks. Not sure how this will make America great??? So far it’s making it into a dump."

"Please prepare. You need water and snacks. Do not weigh yourself down. It is a long strenuous climb. Bring hat and sunscreen. But it was worth it. Most people gave up part way. If you have little kids just going the first 1/4 mile and stopping is still a really good time. The midges were awful at the beach but we whipped out our netting and were great. The shipwreck was super cool"

"The dune climb is a yearly tradition for my family and we have been coming here for a couple of generations. It is always a fun time climbing up and even more fun time running back down. The kids always have a great time and the views are beautiful. I don’t love how expensive it has become in the last several years at $25 a carload. Seems a bit steep (pardon the pun)."

The Dune Climb Experience
While the climb is the main event, the reward at the top is the expansive view of the surrounding dune landscape and the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan. It's important to manage expectations; some reviews point out that this specific spot doesn't offer the dramatic dune-to-water drop seen in some iconic imagery, suggesting the Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook might be a better alternative for that specific view.
Visitors are strongly advised to come prepared. Essential items include ample water, sunscreen, and a hat due to the exposed nature of the dunes. The sand can get very hot, and the climb is physically demanding. For those with young children, exploring the initial quarter-mile of the climb can still be a very enjoyable experience.
Navigating the Dunes and Lake Michigan
Once you reach the lake, the beach offers a place to cool off and relax after the climb. The water temperature can vary, but it's generally refreshing. The shoreline is often rocky, so be mindful of your footing. The overall experience is a blend of physical exertion and natural beauty, offering a unique way to interact with the Great Lakes environment.
For those seeking different perspectives of the dunes, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Road is often recommended as a less strenuous alternative for viewing the landscape. This road provides numerous overlooks with stunning vistas, allowing visitors to appreciate the grandeur of Sleeping Bear Dunes without the intense physical effort of the Dune Climb.
